APRIL 2015. Delighted to hear from Warsaw University that the translated edition of Couple Therapy: Dramas of Love and Sex will form the basis of one of their courses for psychotherapists.
OCTOBER 15th, 2014. TOWIE CHARACTERS USE 'COUPLE THERAPY' TO WORK OUT THEIR 'ISSUES!' Wow. I was delighted to see my book on The Only Way is Essex this week! I hope it was helpful to them. Never thought I'd be (briefly) starring in TOWIE! Here's what some kind reviewers said about this book:
"Couple Therapy is a very innovative book exploring the private worlds of two fictional couples (plus one family) going through RELATE counselling. It is comic strip type graphic novel which highlights relationship issues in an exciting, easy and highly readable way. A 'must' read for anybody experiencing problems in a relationship."
Cary L Cooper, CBE, Distinguished Professor of Organizational Psychology and Health at Lancaster University, UK
"This graphic novel explores some of the problems we all face in our relationships and beautifully describes what goes on in the counselling room to solve them. I love the real feeling of being in the room that the cartoons convey and then the 'what's going on in the counsellor's head' commentary adds depth, followed by some excellent supervision of the work at the end of each chapter. There's no 'dumbing down' and the book gives real insights into the couple and family counselling process. Marvellous!"
Gwilym Roberts, Chief Executive Relate Cymru, UK
"You say you've read self-help-books, but I'm still going to recommend The Relate Guide to Finding Love by Barbara Bloomfield, because it's full of thoughtful advice as well as insights into what men and women like about each other and what's a turn-off. This stuff can be learnt!" - BEL MOONEY writing in FEMAIL 30.3.12
"...Go out and buy this brilliant book!" Daily Mail, July 23rd 2011

Social and feminist history is a passion. With Raphael Samuel and Guy Boanas of Ruskin College, Oxford, I was author of THE ENEMY WITHIN: PIT VILLAGES DURING THE MINERS' STRIKE OF 1984-85. We travelled to many mining villages, collecting people's thoughts and impressions of life during the year-long strike. This book was quite a bricolage of ideas, impressions and memorabilia, collecting memories and oral history and a snapshot of a particular bunch of left-wingers in a historical moment.
IN the 90s I wrote a booklet for a London Weekend TV programme called THE DATING GAME, for which I had to go on 27 dates and try to uncover some of the secrets of a happy relationship. This was one of many reasons for becoming a Relate counsellor in 1994, a job that I still very much enjoy. I helped to edit HISTORY WORKSHOP: A COLLECTANEA, a book that brought together some of the interesting and colourful moments in the life of a group of socialist and feminist worker-historians through the 1970s and 80s. The philosophy of History Workshop was that we can all 'Do History' by showing curiosity, compassion and interest in other people. This was quite radical in the 70s, not so much today! It was a kind of therapy without the navel-gazing.
More recently, I've helped to put together a booklet, ENDURING LOVERS; PEOPLE OVER 75 TALK ABOUT LOVE AND SEX, and a Vermilion book, THE RELATE GUIDE TO FINDING LOVE, which came out in 2009. For the Open University, Chris Radley and I have published the first graphic novel about counselling: COUPLE THERAPY; DRAMAS OF LOVE AND SEX. Jane Silk and I are authors of THE MATURE GUIDE TO RELATIONSHIPS, LOVE AND SEX.
