Review

"... an essential source of clinical, scientific and research references ..." "... an astonishing book ..." BJD (on the 2nd Edition)"... a masterpiece ..." Dermatology (on the second edition)"Any physician who wishes to enhance his or her skills in visual diagnosis would find this book well organised, well illustrated, and an important reference source ..." Lawrence E Millikan in The Lancet "All in all another triumph for the Baran/Dawber team. This book will surely always be found on any departmental shelf and is attractive enough for many dermatologists to want to own it themselves, even at GBP125." Product Description

This new edition brings together five leading authorities in nail surgery to this well established and definitive textbook. The entire text is extended in this edition, and particular emphasis is placed on the advances in treatments that have taken place in recent years. Considerable strides have been made in the treatment of fungal diseases (onychomycoses) with the appearance of new therapeutic agents. There is also much greater coverage of nail surgery to reflect the increasing involvement of the dermatologist in this field. The section on nail tumours has also been expanded. Drs Baran and Dawber have been joined by David de Berker, Eckhart Haneke and Antonella Tosti on the editorial team. This move is representative of the major European contribution to the field of nail surgery in recent years. Significant contribution has come from Dr Elvin Zook, the eminent American hand surgeon, who has helped to ensure that the book is a relevant in North America is it is in Europe.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not for the faint hearted!, 10 Oct 2004
This review is from: Baran and Dawber's Diseases of the Nails and Their Management (Hardcover)
After a many months of trying to purchase this book due to it's limited availability, I finally managed to buy one for the not so inexpensive sum of $160.00!! believing it would have the absolute best and most complete coverage of Nail Disease and Disorders. Well, I guess it does in a way. The book is chock-a-block with photos and illustrations that are disgustingly gruesome to say the least (I turned each and every page, staring at these photos without being able to turn my gaze away and thinking that it was just incredible how anyone could allow their nails to get so disgustingly horrible!)

I had hoped that the text would be comprehencable with lengthy explanations of the causes and cures for these diseases and disorders but unfortunatly for me, I was unable to understand the majority of it. The text is filled with lines and lines of names from other specialists and the books they have written on the said disease/disorder and the rest is mostly very "medical Terms". I've been a Nail Technitions for 16 years and know of some of the more common nail disorders and diseases. I've recently added Pedicure and Foot Care to my curriculum and would have preferred a reference book that was much simpler to understand.

This book would be ideal for a Medical Specialist for Nails. One who is familiar with all the medical terms and who would be able to relate to this as a reference guide to an already full medical education in this field.

I would not recommend this book to someone who wants to be able to recognise common nail disorders and diseases, their causes and their cures.

I hope this review has been helpful.

This review is from: Baran and Dawber's Diseases of the Nails and Their Management (Hardcover)
Baran is the foremost expert on nail diseases. So although i can relate to the comments made by he previous customer..... the audience for this book is different than what he/she is looking for.

For all the ins and outs on nail diseases, this is the one to go for.

For a less complete one and one not from the foremost expert, one can consider the 1995 publication: " handbook of diseases of the nails and their management" by de Berker.
