The bands 3rd album & most consistant, this has to be considered their finest moment. Although classed as an "Indie" band (with Celtic influences), I cant think of anyone else who sounds exactly like this, it really is in its own weird little dream world. Much modern guitar music sounds despairingly similar.. but lo & behold, Euros Childs & his group seems to have found the key to a whole different world of melodies. Just when you think a song is going normaly a key change will suddenly make you sit up and gasp with delight. They just seem to have a different approach to tunes. the "Barafundle Bumbler" is a gem of a song, about a boy whos a peeping tom, and sets the stage for the bands strangely parochial approach. "Starmoonsun" & "Sometimes the father is the sun" are sublimely precious moments, rarely found in todays music. I cannot praise this album enough.

I can't believe I'm the first person to review this record. Quite simply, when I first played it, I cried, for the first time in years. The reason? I guess simply that Real Life can never be as beautiful as the music I was hearing... Of course, with Gorky's there are always a few tracks which are, for want of a better word, 'off beat', but it's amazing how few 'fillers' there are on this CD. If I had to pick one moment, it would have to be the bit in 'Patio Song' where Euros changes from English to Welsh - I don't understand the words, but it's the best expression of happiness in music I've ever heard. An astounding, joyful record.

Barafundle was Gorky's first major label release and saw a shift from their off-kilt psychedelia towards something (slightly) more commercially viable. The acoustic, folk-tinged approach creates a warm, pastoral vibe, best illustrated by tracks like Starmoonsun and Sometimes The Father Is The Son, while Patio Song remains their finest hour and would surely have been a hit single were it not for the song's typically Gorkyish veer into Welsh language territory midway through.
Gorky's seem destined to remain forever a cult act - their name alone should see to that - but this is nevertheless a wonderful, accessible album, and the ideal starting point for the unitiated.

Six of the best
The first six tracks of the album are absolutely sublime, but it tails off a bit. Best track is Starmoonsun. Barafundle is the best thing I've heard in years. Read more
