Having known Glenn Tipton from Judas Priest for so long, I was intrigued when I heard he was to release a solo album. I'm also a big fan of guitarists in general - particularly Yngwie Malmsteen (that is not to say I like all Malmsteen-esque guitarists - Tipton is quite different to YJM I think), so I was expecting an album with no vocals, just heavily-laden with awesome riffs and insane guitar solos...
But I was mistaken, and pleasantly surprised, with the direction Tipton chose to go in. And singing the vocals himself! He's not bad at all, even managing a Rob Halford-like high-pitch scream at one point! Though there's only one track without vocals (the title track itself) the guitar work throughout the album is - as expected from Glenn - hard, tough, grinding, lightning fast and with some technically great solos full of intensity and emotion... really great stuff...
But as a whole, BAPTIZM OF FIRE is only slightly reminiscent of Judas Priest (IMO), as I think Glenn has definately gone in his own direction. There is a great rhythm about the music, great bass, some totally AWESOME drum work from the legendary COZY POWELL (about the time when he did the FACING THE ANIMAL album with Yngwie Malmsteen - one of the best albums of all time and maybe his last work before his tragic death...).
Highlights are "HARD CORE," "FUEL ME UP," "BAPTIZM OF FIRE," "VOODOO BROTHER" and my favourite, "THE HEALER." But every single song is great, IMO. Just forget the money - this album just has to be listened to!
I just hope Glenn can find the time and inspiration to create another great masterwork...

I bought this album when it was first released a few years ago. Some of the singing is a little bit weak but then Glenn Tipton is a guitarust first and sure enough the guitar work is absolutely stunning and the drum work from Cozy Powell on a couple of the tracks leaves you in no doubt why he is still very much missed. Hopefully the new album with Cozy playing on all of the tracks will be even better. Well worth listening to for the sheer technical excellence. Definitely one for the metal fan who prefers the more exclusive end of the market.

I assumed that this would be a fairly average but with some good heavy licks as it was Glenn Tipton from Judas Priest. What I found was traditional ultra heavy rock with fresh feel and very well put together. Baptism doesn't feel like a side project - it very much sounds like a polished effort and a "real" band. Now I wonder how much of the Judas Priest sound comes from GT - this album certainly stands up well.

Glenn Tipton is a fantastic lead guitarist with Judas Priest, not a singer, but this solo album has some very good songs on it. There are some surprises included, mainly that our Glenn is into an even heavier brand of metal than Judas Priest is best known for. I'm not keen on his version of "Paint it Black" (one of my favourite Rolling Stones' songs and only Mick Jagger can do it justice in my opinion), but Glenn's original material is well worth a listen.

This is a must for any fan of Judas Priest. The vocals are nothing special but the musicianship is top drawer. Well worth buying but please note the cd case was very badly damaged upon reciept. This was due to bad packaging. The cd played was in perfect order1
