Excelent product, covers great distance, and over mountains, charged once and the battery is still showing full two weeks later, leaving the pair on for 4 or 5 hours once every three days or so.

I had a pair of these for amateur usage and for use on Scout events as they do meet (allegedly) the interface requirements. However I took the precaution of putting it on my test kit and looking at the performance.

I wasnt expecting a great deal from the radio for the price, but was equally pleased and annoyed with it in several areas.

Lets start with the good...

Nice compact, chunky feel. Has good buttons and tactile feel and a proper OFF switch. The volume control is smooth unlike the UV3R
Display clear and easily readable.
The excellent "talking menu" will be of considerable use to blind or part sighted operators.
Transmit power is good and the supplied rubber duck is OK, and a decent earpiece. You can get a better whip antenna of course but the rubber duck isn't bad
Handy flashlight feature
Battery life is excellent.
Sensitive receiver and front end, good down to at least -129dBm will shame many other commercial handhelds from Icom/Yaesu/Kenwood.
Reasonably good strong signal performance. Copes with close by out of band commercial transmitters well and good in band selectivity.
wide choice of channel steps - 2.5, 5, 6.25, 10, 12.5, 25 Khz stepping
Easily enough programmable without a cable search the web there are many guides.
If you have the programming cable CHIRP is a diddle to use and very useful
Programmed one radio? Get a clone cable and you just copy it to any other UV5R - very handy.
Some people said that these are poor on frequency accuracy and they drift - my pair of these certainly didn't. Compared to a rubidium source and checked they were within 100Hz of where they wanted to be, and drift by perhaps 100Hz more warming up under a long transmit.

Great little radio for the money, although had to buy a cheap replacement antenna as the rube duck isn't the best. Not as complicated to manually program as many make out, I figured it out in 15 mins, although I have ought the cable now.

This is quite good for the price. Reception on the standard antenna is a joke - unable to hear anything, even the nearest repeater half a mile away, but if you plug in a decent one it springs into life.

It'll never replace a proper radio but on a budget, sit on a hill with good antenna and you'll be listening with the best.

I bought 2 of these radios and so far only have 1 issue. One of the batteries will NOT charge at all and I keep getting red and green led's flashing while trying to charge it. (I have ordered another battery rather than send the whole package back). As for the radios both are working fine (apart from the battery issue). They are easy to setup and use. They are a nice small size and are a lot better than I thought they would be at this price point! I soon had them setup to match my other radios which is great! If you want a decent little radio at a great price point, you can't go far wrong with these. Please don't be put off by my comments about the faulty battery as its just one of those things I guess. I am thinking of buying a few more of these.

Disappointed charging units came with an EU (2 pin) power adaptor. Which from experience tends to fall out of most EU/UK converters interrupting charge. I previously purchased. 2 direct from China & they came with a UK plug. Great little set otherwise, covers what it says. Easy to setup & use.

These radios do seem to be of the same quality as the Japanese models that sell for 10 times the price of the BaoFeng. In spite of the reviews I read the menu is easy to use, though you should note that you cannot program to most UK channels manually, as the format for these is XXX.XXXX and the BaoFeng will only take XXX.XXX manually- this does leave you four channels under the UK Light Commercial licence, though. The serial cable is highly recommended as this allows you to program the rest of the frequencies.
My only issue with this radio has come with the connecting of the radios to my computer via the USB-Serial adapter. There are some good tutorials online to help with these issues- both driver and with the design of the cable itself. All in all I am very pleased with this purchase, especially considering the extreme low cost.
