5.0 out of 5 stars Brahmsian but very good with it, 12 Nov 2011

This review is from: Bantock: Cello Sonatas (Audio CD)
You can scratch many composers of Bantock's era and find Brahms, but it'd be churlish to assume its second-rate imitation. The connection is more likely psychological kinship as much as the common denominator of august, tenacious contrapuntal study. You might even argue for a certain celtic light reflecting back into the Germanic side of the equation. George Bernard Shaw the pro-active critic and thinker seems to evince that.I heard this at a friends' house for the first time the other night. Ideal late-night fare for the weary traveller. The performances are simply beautiful (I've heard of Lucy Wakeford, but why aren't the other two better-known?), as is the recorded acoustic. The use of the harp with Cello is a sonata format is gorgeously mellow and yet musically edgy. Sir Gran, my friend reminded me, was conductor of the BBC Variety Orchestra for several years, and the breadth and humanity here might be echoing that.
