This is a brilliant Latin dictionary. Not too large, not too small, not too archaic for modern use. And best of all, it is very cheap!
The definitions of words are clearly laid out, as is the different ways in which the same word can be used, with the area of useage given in brackets e.g. (legal) or (military).
Similarly the English to Latin section is very useful and simple to use, with a plethora of words to help prose composition and quickly finding a word you know without working through words with similar stems.
Overall a bargain and a worthy addition to the Classicist's bookshelf!

I agree with the first reviewer of this dictionary. This is the best pocket Latin dictionary, both in terms of scope of Latin (it does cover late Latin vocabulary as far as I can tell) and in terms of Value for money. It is superior to any Oxford/Collins Latin dictionary. The only drawback is the it does not give example from Latin authors (or references; this is also the case with the various smaller oxford latin dictionaries): unlike Cassell's and Chambers-Murray dictionaries. But the Latin expressions are printed in bold type: so this is very easy to find idioms in this dictionary.

Traupman wins again 26 Jun 2007

Professor John Traupman produced a wonder book for Latinists, cross word puzzle workers, or just those who want to know a little about the Latin connection of English. It is the finest concise, small in size, {It fits in my field jacket pocket.} Latin/English, English/Latin dictionary in the world. His paradigms for Latin grammar, in the front of the dictionary is wonderful. There are no better. Essential for the Latin student, teacher, or Classicist. Valuable for those who just want to read Latin works in the original.

It has the words I want to look up 28 Feb 2008
By Peter R. Chastain - Published on Amazon.com
I wanted a Latin dictionary that would be easy to carry, so I went to a local bookstore and looked at several, using my standard technique for choosing dictionaries: I tried finding certain words in all of them. This was the only one with names of many "private" body parts and sexual practices.

It is not so much that I need to look up those particular words; I just think that a dictionary that excludes them is probably deficient in other respects. I like Vergil, but I also want to read the language of the streets.

All dictionaries translate words in isolation, but this one does a particularly good job of showing how they are used in common idiomatic expressions. For example, "thank you for" is translated "gratias tibi ago ob (w. acc)."

I own four Latin dictionaries and sometimes use others online, but this is the one I use most often.

Best Latin dictionary of its size for the money 9 Nov 2007
By L. Higley - Published on Amazon.com
Traupman's New College Latin and English Dictionary is the best small dictionary you can get for the money, bar none. Dr. Traupman really does know his words. I have several copies stashed in various places, and give them to my students as "praemia" (rewards.) There are cuter dictionaries, and bigger ones, but this one will definitely see you safely through your undergrad work (and part of your grad work too) and will be the dictionary you grab as you are looking for just the right definition of most of the Latin that life might chance to throw your way.
