Book Description

13 July 2012
The single best collection of photographs of Banksy's street work. Period. You Are An Acceptable Level of Threat concentrates on this singular artist's iconic imagery, spanning the late '90s up until the end of 2011. The locations are from around the world (predominantly the UK, US and Europe), and many images have never been seen before. When Banksy started out painting, the political landscape was bleak. Fortunately now, it's ten times worse. As Banksy's cheerfully aggressive political work becomes ever more relevant, this comprehensive tome sets about presenting his art in the context of the era he was responding to.

More About the Author

Banksy, real name unknown, was born in Bristol. His artworks are often satirical pieces of art on topics such as politics, culture, and ethics.

His street art, which combines graffiti writing with a distinctive stencilling technique, is similar to Blek le Rat, who began to work with stencils in 1981 in Paris and members of the anarcho-punk band Crass who maintained a graffiti stencil campaign on the London Tube System in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Banksy's stencils feature striking and humorous images occasionally combined with slogans. The message is usually anti-war, anti-capitalist or anti-establishment. Subjects include rats, monkeys, policemen, soldiers, children, and the elderly.

His art has appeared in cities around the world. Banksy does not sell photos of street graffiti. Banksy's first film, Exit Through The Gift Shop, billed as "the world's first street art disaster movie", made its debut at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival.

5.0 out of 5 stars its the context... 12 Aug 2012
I'd heard the rumour that Banksy was not an individual, rather a team, but reading this book's analogy comparing 'him' to the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers made me laugh out loud, e.g. "Is Banksy a Megazord?"

Note that this book goes a bit beyond a photography collection. It challenges you to assess your relationship with the politics behind Banksy's work. But hey, if all you're interested in is pretty pictures of street art, it's still a good collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for any Banksy enthusiast 9 Aug 2012
A great book, packed with many great photos of Banksy's work. Most importantly the text... is not dull in any way, it's really entertaining as well as informative which keeps you hooked as you flick through.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have for any street art fan 6 Aug 2012
By Wahine
I've got a few different titles about street art in general and Banksy in particular, and 'Banksy: You are an acceptable level of threat...' is easily one of the best. The curation of the images is flawless, including many of pieces I've not seen elsewhere, but it's really the text that makes it special: funny AND thought-provoking.

This book has excellent photographs, but it is the text that helps the viewer, or the neutral, understand what might make Banksy tick. I had not considered many of the points of view the author puts across, and his tone is rather as I imagine Banksy's to be. Perhaps he knows Banksy, or is a member of the Banksy team? A very entertaining, thought-provoking book, and an excellent insight into a person- or team- I now think of as being brilliant.

This really sucks! I ordered a copy before the book was published and all I received is a copy of the second edition of the book. I'd better had it ordered elsewhere!
