This review is from: The Bankruptcy Diaries (Paperback)
I steamed through this in a day due to the writer's easy style and the diary format really suits this story of crazy spending and mounting bills. Anyone who lived through these times will recognise a lot of the distasteful behaviour that goes on during an economic boom. For me this was the book's strong point: the journey of the narrator from reckless, youthful extravagance to fairly philosophical adult. I felt that I shared the character's journey and really ended up rooting for him and hoping he would end up sticking it to The Man.Even with the country's finances in such a desperate state there are still people out there who view bankruptcy incredibly negatively and I think this book does a lot to challenge that view. There will always be people who maintain that bankruptcy's a coward's way out (mostly the hedge fund managers and bankers who got us into this mess in the first place) but this book reminded me of how mental it was in the early 2000s - I remember getting my first credit card after Uni and after that the banks couldn't throw money at me fast enough, I'd forgotten how easy it was to come by a boatload of cash just by filling out a form - and I don't remember anyone at any of the banks I dealt with expressing any concern about my ability to pay it back. I definitely don't think that consumers are the ones who should take all the accountability, not when banks were raising credit limits all over the place without even being asked to. This is a must read for anyone who has ever had a credit card or been burnt by the banks.

Couldn't put this book down. An intimately and refreshingly honest insight into a commonly experienced and yet rarely discussed status. Very current and feisty. Sad to have finished it but this book would lend itself well to a film so hopefully won't be disappointed for long! Highly recommend
