Product Description

Product Description

The engaging tale of the fortunes and misfortunes of the fictional Tolan Family spans the globe and evokes mirth and tears throughout the volumes. This is a family that goes out and makes things happen! The stories, which span from 1779 to the present day, are narrated from a study in an old family house in Girvan, Scotland.
Banking, Beer and Robert The Bruce, the first novel in The Book of Tolan, introduces vividly etched family characters with a humor that will have old Monty Python fans rolling in their graves with merriment and has enough wacky ideas to keep the reader glued to each page.
Murphy Patrick Tolan, born in 1779, is the first in a line of the remembered Tolans. With the famous potato famine of the early nineteenth century, Ireland’s food is running short and Murphy, as with all other Irish folk, needs to get across the Irish Sea pretty urgently. He finds out belatedly that being single is a disadvantage.
The family manuscripts begin in Scotland. A very large leather bound book appears in Murphy’s attic one day with a yellow note instructing Murphy to start recording his life and then pass it on. It takes him a couple of years to pluck up the courage to write in this large book that is certainly not from his era, nor ours!
The adventures that are recorded in the book over the generations are funny and filled with the fantasy and drama that most of us wish we had in our own lives.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rollicking adventure through time 14 Jun 2012

I recently found this book through reading the author's Invasion USA series. I enjoyed this one even more than I did the invasion series. This book follows the Tolan family through the 1800's and into the early 1900's. It reads like a biography of an English family but it is fiction.

The book starts slow but builds to an incredibly funny book. The story of the creation of the beer known as Robert the Bruce, born from a plant grown in outhouse drippings had me laughing out loud in parts. Like a George RR Martin novel, I hated seeing favorite characters die in sometimes untimely deaths but that was a hallmark of the time period.

The way that the book was written reminds me a lot of James Michener's books Chesapeake, Alaska, or Texas where the book follows a huge cast of characters through more than a hundred years of misadventurers as the family's fortunes ebb and flow like the tides. I am looking forward to reading the second and third books in the series.

I was, hooked from the first chapter,to the end of the trilogy, reading all three books in one week. What a wonderful gift T.I.Wade has been blessed with. His light and hardy enrichment of words joins the reader with the rogue and the worthy of his fictional Tollan family and their mis-adventuring as they revel around the world with their exciting lust for life,a mania unincounter in my reading experiance. The reader is rewarded with a refreshing belly-rolling laughter, as the author moves about the venture of the modern human experience at its roots in everyday life. Journey through this adventre from the industrial revolution to the future and beyond as T.I.Wade stretch's the human dimension. It is only in laughing at ourselves that we know who we are. What a wonderful refreshing read. Few writers have the gift to hold the reader anxiously awaiting the next escapade. T.I.Wades' writing style lifts the reader's spirits above the everyday storytelling of the formula writer.
