More About the Author

Banksy, real name unknown, was born in Bristol. His artworks are often satirical pieces of art on topics such as politics, culture, and ethics.

His street art, which combines graffiti writing with a distinctive stencilling technique, is similar to Blek le Rat, who began to work with stencils in 1981 in Paris and members of the anarcho-punk band Crass who maintained a graffiti stencil campaign on the London Tube System in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Banksy's stencils feature striking and humorous images occasionally combined with slogans. The message is usually anti-war, anti-capitalist or anti-establishment. Subjects include rats, monkeys, policemen, soldiers, children, and the elderly.

His art has appeared in cities around the world. Banksy does not sell photos of street graffiti. Banksy's first film, Exit Through The Gift Shop, billed as "the world's first street art disaster movie", made its debut at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival.

I'm a big fan of Banksy, not many graf artists (Spilla n Stab) can communicate using a simple image and with such sly, political humour. To be fair, alot of his work can be ripped off the net and 'Scrawl 2'- particularly his website. Not much new material, but a great collated resource of his best stencil work. The book is laid out in black and white, reflecting the use of his stencils. At times the text is "philosophical" (Some hilarious quotes and stories), but lurking underneath is the cheeky Banksy humour. There's also a great little piece on how to create your very own stencils. Real good value for money, I can't wait for Existencilism.

Travel through any urban environment and you will see much graffiti. Most of it can be seen as mindless and an act of vandalism, but that is missing the point. Some artists strive to elevate the form or at least make the viewer think. Bansky is one such person. His graffiti can be found around the East End and is both playful and astute in it's targets. The book is pocket sized and should be seen as documentary proof images that probably no longer exists. The temporary nature of the form means that these striking pieces will usually be removed fairly quickly, whilst our minds are allowed to be polluted by advertising hoardings that are far more damaging. If spray can art is of interest to you, get this booklet. If not, you may be lucky enough to walk past one of his works in the future. Give it a second glance.

A short but really good insight into Banksy's world with both pictures and explanations about his graffitis and ideas. If you love Banksy's works you will love this book!

Great little review of Banksy's work 4 Jan. 2007
By nycvz - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This book is a wonderful and witty review of Bansky's work written by the artist himself. I also highly recommend "Cut It Out." Both books are somewhat hard to find, but can be purchased here on Amazon or for reasonable prices at another great design book website, You Work for Them. Bansky's hardcover book, "Wall and Piece" is another must have. Cheers!

THAT expensive ?! 26 Jan. 2014
By Kik - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
First, let me be plain and clear : I do love Banksy's artwork(s). His style, his creativity, his wit -his subversive cleverness. This said... though "Wall and Piece" is already on my shelve with other street art books, I shall not buy "Banging your head against a brick wall". Why ? Well, I need somebody to explain me its price first, for it represents an oxymoron with what I know on Banksy (or should I write "what I thought I knew" ?). No matter how convinced I am that it enshrines words and pictures I'd surely savour... I shan't bang my head against such a brick book... not until I understand its price. A hint, anyone ?
