A refreshing take on a well-tried formula, The Banger Sisters proves that there is always room for a polished new "women's picture", particularly one with a high astringent content. The eponymous sisters are a couple of girlfriends with a groupie past who haven't seen each other for years. Suzette (an ebullient Goldie Hawn) has remained a confirmed rock chick. When she's sacked from her bar job, she goes in search of Vinnie (Susan Sarandon) who has excised her past from her life as a staid wife and mother.

The performances are good and there are some cracking moments, not least as the initially resistant Sarandon seizes the memory of her youth and sheds her skin of respectability to the bewilderment of her husband and two daughters. Suzette's visit is the catharsis her old friend has long needed. (In many ways, of course, the most interesting aspect of the picture is the one we don't get to see: the long-term consequences of some pretty sleazy old revelations on a middle class family). But there's a pleasing poignancy in Hawn's decision to go home, her work done. And Geoffrey Rush, as usual, is outstanding as Harry, the neurotic writer she has picked up on the way and who could, just possibly, provide some stability in her itinerant life.

Suzette (Goldie Hawn, First Wives’ Club) is an ex-groupie who, with her tattoos, boob job and wild partying ways, seems determined to live in her glorious past. When she loses her bar job however, Suzette begins to think her days of being a rock chick are numbered and embarks on a road trip to Phoenix. She plans to seek out her old friend and fellow groupie Vinnie (Susan Sarandon, Thelma and Louise) for help, support … and hopefully a good time! Along the way, Suzette picks up an uptight, depressed and celibate writer called Harry (Geoffrey Rush, Shakespeare in Love), who seems to be on a bizarre mission to shoot his father. Suzette’s infectious humour and lust for life soon start rubbing off however, and the two form a strong bond, made even stronger when Suzette decides to awaken Harry’s sexual passion! Now all Suzette has to deal with is Vinnie, who has transformed from a trendy rock goddess into a prim, beige-wearing suburban wife and mother, with no plans for a trip down memory lane! The arrival of Suzette throws Vinnie’s carefully organized life into disarray. Her daughters and husband know nothing of her past, and with Suzette wanting to party like they did before, Vinnie has to answer some increasingly tricky questions. Her daughter, Ginger (Eva Amurri, Anywhere But Here) is struggling with her driving test and her other daughter, Hannah (Erika Christensen, Traffic, Swimfan) is about to graduate. With both girls demanding all Vinnie’s time, she realizes with envy that Suzette has never lost the free spirit attitude they shared in their younger days, and that it’s high time Vinnie enjoyed a reawakening. Juggling a night on the tiles with the school run is just that bit more of a challenge!

In THE BANGER SISTERS, Goldie Hawn doesn't giggle as much as she did thirty-two years ago on "Laugh-In", but, under that unruly mop of blond hair, she can still give that crooked little grin that's just so darned appealing.

Goldie plays Suzette, an aging ex-groupie of the sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll generation who's a legend in her own mind and, undoubtedly, in the libidos of all the musicians she slept with. Just fired from her bartending gig at a Hollywood club by a young boss who doesn't have the proper respect for historical figures, Suzette sets out by car for Phoenix to look up Lavinia (Susan Sarandon), her pal and fellow groupie from the good old days. Along the way, she picks up Harry (Geoffrey Rush), a tightly wound wannabe writer that hasn't had sex in ten years and travels with a pistol loaded with one bullet. She arrives at her destination only to discover that Lavinia has "gone straight", i.e., is married to a lawyer and living a constipated middle-class existence in the affluent suburbs with two spoiled daughters, a banana hammock, and an all-beige wardrobe.

The plot of this film is about nothing more than the effect of Suzette's uninhibited ebullience on Harry, Lavinia, and the latter's family. And, it should have been limited to just Lavinia's small circle if the editing department had perhaps done the smart thing and relegated the subplot involving Harry to the cutting room floor. Sarandon does well enough as a responsible Mom divesting herself of the inhibitions that have layered themselves over a formerly free spirit. To that end, her husband and daughters are nothing more than animated props serving as foils to this process catalyzed by the intrusion of Suzette into their overly-ordered lives. There's one sequence in the family basement involving some revealing old Polaroids that's worth the price of admission.

The best reason to see THE BANGER SISTERS is Goldie Hawn, who, 57 at the time of this film's release, has aged well. She must work out. And when did she get so, um, stacked? Suzette makes a point of telling Lavinia that not everything one sees under her tank top is real. Perhaps that's it - but the effect is remarkable, especially if one remembers the Goldie of an earlier age. In any case, this film doesn't approach being memorable, but the effervescent Ms. Hawn has earned the right to be remembered simply for the delight she's provided fans over the decades.

The Banger Sisters is a great film, totally funny with great performances from Goldie Hawn, Susan Sarandon and Geoffrey Rush! Great story and great characters, what more can I say? Buy this DVD!

Suzette (Hawn) is an ageing rock chick. Vinny/La Vinnia (Sarandon) was her best friend when they were young and wild. Suzette gets fired from her job working in a rock bar and decides to drive across country to seek out her old friend (who's now married to a lawyer and has children). Along the way she meets Harry and gives him a lift.

Things don't go as planned when they get to Phoenix but she does get to talk to Vinny.

The film could best be described as a frothy drama. There are not that many laughs but it doesn't get very deep either. It stays somewhere in the middle for the most part. The characters are sympathetic.

In short it's a feel good film about relationships.
