Some of the most important songs of Cher's solo career - from the mid 60es to 1967 - are represented in this album. During this period Cher is supported by Sonny Bono, her future husband. He is the one who signs the majority of the songs we find in this compilation. Among the most important ones, "Where do you go", "Magic in the air (I feel like something in the air)" and "You'd better sit down, kids", together with "Bang bang (My baby shot me down)", the song that signed their greatest success and became a hit in America and all over the world, and was then covered by countless artists.
Some covers, such as "All I really want to do" (Bob Dylan), "Sunny" (Bobby Hebb) and "It's not unusual", made then famous by Tom Jones, are also well represented.
With these songs, Cher has been able to prove her great talent, not only in the musical panorama. Even though some of these songs have not been appreciated immediately and never entered the TOP chart, they have anyway been revaluated over time (Needles and pins", "Elusive butterfly" and "Dream baby").
The larva has become a beautiful butterfly and she has flew off with her sparkling wings... the fairy tale still continues...

And so this is where Cher's career started... 16 Oct. 2002
By Neal Reynolds - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This is indeed recommended for those who just discovered Cher through her "Believe" and "Living Proof" CDs. Cher has been labeled "legendary" by many and this collection of material which even many older fans may have forgotten helps justify such a label.
The album starts off with "Dream Baby", a 1965 recording made under her full name of Cherilyn. Next comes the first of several covers, Bob Dylan's "All I Really Wanted To Do", followed by the Kinks' Ray Davies "I Go To Sleep". Notable also are her great hits from the era, the original version of "Bang Bang", "Needles and Pins", and "Elusive Butterfly".
"Alfie" actually is a cover, since the song was first recorded by Cilla Black and was expected to be a big hit is the U. S. as well as England. That was wrecked by the use of Cher's version over the final credits of the movie and the subsequent release of Cher's version as a single.
The closing song is an outstanding cover of Tom Jones' "It's Not Unusual".
The presence here of the best of her early Imperial/Liberty recordings, all of her early major hits, and great covers all combine to make this a must for all who are her fans.
The 60's style does date this collection and needs to be taken into consideration. If you just don't like 60's music, this won't likely appeal to you. Otherwise, this is a good basic item for any collection.

Cher is one of the best folk rock singers ever! 24 Jun. 2000
By Ward J. Lamb - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This vintage collection finds Cher in her cool 60's mode with many gems to share. The girl groupchestnut "Dream Baby" starts out the set here, and is probably the most faithful Bono rip off of that style. Cher's version of "Alfie" is haunting and emotive. "Bang Bang" is probably her greatest song of this era, stunningly iconoclastic! The violin intro forshadows gypsy classics of her 70's output. Cher is relaxed and insular here, and just plain enjoying the songs. Her rollicking read on "needles and Pins" has a country edged feel with lots of momentum. "Sunny" gets a personal touch, as we all know why, she is singing it to him!"I Go to Sleep" probably inspired Chryssie Hynde's version and is a great Ray Davies song that Cher puts her stamp on. This compilation is remastered and sounds great! Cher has a good foundation to base her long career on here! Her fresh simple arrangements let her shine.

Cher was special from the start 9 July 2013
By Matthew G. Sherwin - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Cher (born Cherilyn Sarkisian La Piere, May 20, 1946) is so much more than just a singer and an actress; she is a pop-culture icon whose career has now spanned several decades! Cher has also written songs, been a TV show host, produced music and films--and she's done even more. With any luck Cher will continue to entertain millions all over the world for many years to come, too! This is a terrific album featuring her earlier work as a singer, and it's great to hear and appreciate just how well her voice sounded from the word go. These tracks are presented mostly in chronological order and the quality of the sound is excellent. In addition, there are liner notes by Chris White.

There's not a dud in the lot here; every track is excellent and Cher is squarely in the spotlight which is right where she belongs! I really like how the CD starts with "Dream Baby" from 1964 which Cher recorded under her full name Cherilyn; wow, how she aces this and I'm very impressed with her passionate delivery! Listen also for other fine tunes including "All I Really Want to Do" which also was the title of Cher's first album; "I Go to Sleep" with key and tempo changes that work wonders for the tune; "Come and Stay with Me" that I really like (this is yet another number with that awesome `60s sound); "Where Do You Go;" the sublime "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me" that I could never get tired of hearing when the most talented Cher performs it so very well; the classic "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)" with that rich musical arrangement to accompany Cher as she sings; "Needles and Pins" which has Cher at her usual best; "Elusive Butterfly" that Cher couldn't have done any better--indeed, her version is easily favorite; terrific interpretations of the classics "Alfie" and "Sunny;" the poignant "Behind the Door;" the memorable "Magic In The Air (I Feel Something In The Air)" and "Mama (When My Dollies Have Babies);" and then come Cher's outstanding treatments of "Hey Joe;" "You Better Sit Down Kids;" "The Girl From Ipanema" and the final track, "It's Not Unusual."

Cher really was one of the best then and she clearly is today! The "critics" may have written off her career a few times but wow, how they were oh, so wrong! I highly recommend this for Cher's fans and anyone who appreciates brilliantly performed, classic songs and ballads from the 1960s.

What A Great Surprise! 23 Dec. 1999
By "jonofoz" - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Who knew she could actually SING? I bought this CD several days ago; I'm still impressed. ALL I REALLY WANT TO DO, NEEDLES AND PINS, and YOU BETTER SIT DOWN KIDS are fabulous stand-outs, but every song is wonderful. I reccommend this album to anyone who likes authentic 60s music, loves Cher, or who thinks BELIEVE is all that this amazing woman has to offer.

CHER - AT HER ABSOLUTE BEST 2 July 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This is, without a doubt, the best collection of Cher's early work: without Sonny and before Oscar. While her recent work is very good, especially the CD "Believe," Cher's early work is exceptional. If you listen to this CD and some of her later recordings, you'll notice that there is a totally different vocal quality. Cher shines on the ethereal, "Mama (When My Dollies Have Babies)" which was the b-side of "You Better Sit Down Kids" which is probably the best recording that ever dealt with divorce (ironically, the song, which was written by Sonny and intended for a male vocal, was sung by Cher playing the part of the father in the song).
The other standouts in this compilation include "Bang Bang," "Needles and Pins" (which is even better interpreted by Jackie DeShannon), "I Go To Sleep," and "Dream Baby."
This CD is a must for both die-hard Cher fans and the teeny boppers of today who may only know of Cher via "Believe."
