If you like Westerns, or you're a fan of either Dean Martin, James Stewart or Raquel Welch, then Bandolero! is great way to pass 102 minutes of movie action.
Set in Texas and Mexico in 1867, the film follows the Bishop gang who get caught robbing a bank, escape the hangman's noose and find themselves over the border in dusty Mexico being tailed by a Texas sheriff and his ten man posse. A horde of roving bandits are thrown into the mix and the whole thing ends up in a climactic shoot up and a high body count.
Although there's much violence here, Bandolero! is filmed in the traditional way and is not a gritty 'spaghetti' western. In fact, it has a wholesome feel to it and even has a sprinkling of romance and family reconcilement in the post-Civil War era thrown in.
The cast make this movie and, as usual, James Stewart brings effortless gravitas to the story. Dean Martin seems to excel in his cheeky chappy roles and Raquel Welsh is the delectable eye candy. I'm sure we'll forgive her attempts at a Mexican accent. At one point, a Mexican bandit also attempts to rape her and her black tights are clearly on display - almost a century before they were actually invented - but again, I'm sure that movie watchers will forgive such historical inaccuracies...
Overall, a very watchable, traditional type of Western with a great story and an all star cast. Although there's nothing by way of any extras here, this DVD does not disappoint.
