Harold Budd has been responsible for three of my favourite records of all time. And I don't mean favourite in any kind of critical 'top 100 albums' type sense - I just mean that the little ticker that clocks up the music I play, shows that I play Budd more than anything else. I just can't get enough of this guy's tunes. He's a wizard, musically speaking.

So, The Pearl, Nighthawks, Translucence and Drift Music and Ambient 2/The Plateaux Of Mirror - all on very heavy rotation. Then I discovered Bordeauxand that is now my favourite. It is unbelievably good - I listen to it a lot at night when I'm drifting off, fairly sure it can send me into an altered state of consciousness.

This record new Bandits of Stature is totally unlike any of the above though. It's all string quartets (three violins and a viola) and very good it is too. Budd's genius for concision and minimalism means that this stuff just never ever gets close to being pseudo-classical. Overall the tone of the pieces isn't as quietly ecstatic as, say, first light. In fact it's all quite austere, albeit in a beautifully constructed way.

Like all good music (and especially Harold Budd's music) this one is likely to withstand years of listening, revealing more as time goes on.

Quite nice - especially when taken in small doses 10 Aug 2013
By Mike Murphy - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I previewed the songs on 'Bandits of Stature' Harold Budd (composer) using the Amazon.com preview feature...I liked the songs; all tracks, except track 9, are played by a string Quartet: Andrew Tholl, violin; Mark Menzies, violin; Andrew McIntosh, viola; and Ashley Walters, cello. Track 9 includes just two instruments: piano played by Harold Budd accompanied by violinist Mark Menzies.

However, I chose to buy other Budd CDs that are not available through MP3 download from dealers on Amazon and decided to buy this CD later from Waterloo Records in Austin (Texas).

Of course one of the main advantages of buying the CD rather than the MP3 download is the CD insert and the information it contains about the music. Also, the cover art is often appealing, and I suppose some music lovers also buy different releases of the same album (I mean CD) if the cover art changes.....though for 'Bandits of Stature' the cover art is minimalist to say the least (not bad...just minimalist).

The CD contains 14 tracks:

1. The Dream of the Girl at the Lonely Desert Cafe 2:01
2. Claude Lorrain Avoids the Cinder Block Motel 2:54
3. Nicolas Poussin Near 29 Palms 2:28
4. Perfume Doesn't Dance 3:01
5. Shout(for Jane Maru) 4:21
6. The Moss of Imagination 4:09
7. Puvis Startled by Joy 1:58
8. Seven Colonnades 5:45
9. Veil of Orpheus (Cy Twombly's) 7:18
10. Haru Spring 1:50
11. From the Sea of Changes 3:00
12. Bandits of Stature 2:45
13. Llano 1:49
14. Babylon Balboa 1:26

This CD is quite somber and melancholy and would be a good CD to study by, or to play on a rainy day - though, I think it would be best taken in small doses....that is, listen to a few tracks then put it away and play another Budd CD, or another CD you like, for a change....I enjoy this particular CD played that way.

Track 9 is my favorite on this CD - quite a beautiful piece of music; though I do like the entire CD.

I enjoy listening to the same Harold Budd song played in different ways, using different instruments, or live versus a studio recording. Thus, 'Haru Spring' on 'Bandits of Stature' sounds quite different than 'Haru Spring' on 'In the Mist'.

Another example would be 'Avalon Sutra' a 2 CD set, which has on CD 1, track 14 'As Long as I can Hold my Breath'3:47; versus CD 2 Track 1 (and only 1 Track on CD 2) 'As Long as I can Hold my Breath' 1:09:27; versus 'Forever Hold my Breath' on 'A Song for Lost Blossums' 9:52; this last tune, which is the same melody, is played using a combination of strings and an electric guitar. All 3 versions are somewhat different, all 3 versions are very, very nice.

Though the version of 'As Long as I can Hold my Breath' that is 1:09:27 long, is also primarily stringed instruments (but with a piano background (and electric guitar?), the music is quite different from 'Bandits of Stature'. I've listened to 'As long as I can Hold my Breath' several times and was surprised when the CD stopped playing -- over an hour had already passed.

I can truthfully say that all of the Harold Budd CDs or MP3 downloads I've purchased are excellent recordings, individualistic in style and, as a music library, provides a wide range of beautiful music, played using a wide variety of instruments. 'Bandits of Stature' complements and adds to my music library.
