If hankies and socks are considered the most boring presents to receive they are nevertheless in daily use for the majority so surely do deserve their place in the gift drawer. This set of four pure cotton, jolly, brightly coloured and attractive Bandanas/handkerchiefs would make a great offering as they are already boxed up for presentation in a stylish way.

It was the naval hero Lord Nelson who ensured the wealth of the cotton industry of the time which produced Indian dyes and paisley patterns for `kerchiefs used at sea, especially at Trafalgar. I know this because I am married to a fisherman who is also a descendant of the Admiral. The clever idea being that red coloured cloths can be worn around the neck and whipped off fast to cover an injury and take away the shock factor of flowing blood; much in the same way as blankets in ambulances were once bright red.

This selection of dark blue and red paisley pattern, traditional red and white spots, navy blue and white spots are just the ticket. They come rolled into a cigar shape with a paper insert, tidily taped to keep them neat. I ironed these before use to return them to the more usual squares. Take a tip too, wash them separately at first as the colours will run for the initial washes at a high temp.

From our own experience they last for decades, I am still ironing ones that belonged to my father in law who died in 1971. Eventually they get thin and holed (maybe after thirty years) but on the way they get softer and softer, more and more of an old friend.
