Review

This frisky compendium of band-name album-cover artwork, trivia, tidbits and liberal dashes if this and that, it translates into hours of browsing by rock lovers of all ages.--Neil Pond"American Profile" (12/12/2009)

Product Description

"What's in a name? Ask the lead singer."

A big, open-it-anywhere book created for music fans and pop-culture followers of all ages, The Band Name Book explains how (or where) the best-named bands in history got their names. Those names are profound, clever, silly, provocative or downright obscure. This entertaining book is full of information and trivia about bands from the dawn of rock 'n' roll right up to today's Internet-based independents.

The Beatles are here, as well as Led Zeppelin, Pearl Jam, Nine Inch Nails and the Goo Goo Dolls. But the best fun is found with rock history's lesser-known groups, in Web-savvy contemporary bands, and with true originals. Among their names: Atomic RoosterArctic MonkeysThe LemonheadsThe FormaldebridesThe Soup DragonsPavlov's WoodyArcade FireBig Al and the KaholicsHectic WatermelonSmorgasborgnine.

The Band Name Book includes entries on thousands of bands from more than 30 countries, divided into dozens of entertaining and irreverent categories with special notes on name origins, genres and best album titles. There are profiles of notable bands. And there's even a list of "Names Still Available" for each category.

This is a book that does exactly what it says on the cover, it gives you hundreds of band names and gives you information on how they git their names. Within, I found bands I've been into for years and still had no idea how their names came about. Now I know! It also contains hundreds of other bands that you've most likely never heard of, but thanks to their original names, you won't forget their stories. A particular favourite of mine is the story behind the naming of the band "The F**k F**ks"
Well laid out and filled with band artwork.

Who's the guy who wrote a review without seeing or reading this book?! It's great! Tons of facts on hundreds and hundreds of bands. Great posters and CD covers. And it's hilarious! I gave six of them as xmas gifts.
Delightful book, but with an indexing flaw: 24 Jan 2011
By James Pernikoff - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
A very interesting book, with most of the bands that I know (but where are the Hooters?), and hundreds that I don't! The stories and graphics are very entertaining, though I've found a few entries where the author talks about the band but doesn't say how their name came about, which is the main purpose of the book, isn't it?

I do have a bone to the pick with the index, which in some ways is TOO good, since it lists every instance where a band is mentioned. Problem is, there is no easy way to find the band's main entry! For instance, the Beatles have fifteen pages listed in their index entry, but where are they themselves actually listed? It turns out they're on one of the first pages listed (46), but what if they weren't? I would suggest in a future edition adding this enhancement: make the band's own article reference in BOLD type, to distinguish it from all the other references.

Still, that's a fairly minor quibble. A lot of work went into this and I appreciate it.

Now here's a book that's right on time! Good for all folks 6 to 60! Tremendously tantalizing trivia. Historic. Immediate. Colorful. Interesting. Well-Organized and thoroughly Useful.
