Product Description

Product Description

Every year 17 BILLION carrier bags are given away free in the UK – that means an average of 300 carrier bags for every man, woman and child in Britain. Plastics do not biodegrade. Scientists now estimate that plastic lasts for at least 1000 years. Every carrier bag that has ever been produced is still on the planet, in landfill, hedgerows, or floating in the sea. Plastic bag litter is lethal, killing over 100,000 seabirds, dolphins, seals, whales and turtles EVERY YEAR. In May 2007 Modbury in South Devon became Britain’s first plastic bag free town. This book takes the Modbury story and uses it as a call to action, entreating every village, town and city in the country to follow Modbury’s example and BAN THE PLASTIC BAG.

About the Author

A leading campaigner in the fight to rid the UK of plastic carrier bags, cameraperson Rebecca Hoskins encountered the destruction caused by carrier bag pollution first hand while filming marine life for the BBC. The sight of the sea filled with plastic and dying sea animals inspired her to persuade the town traders from her hometown of Modbury to stop using carrier bags. Modbury is now plastic bag free.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Little Book to Help Change the World, 17 May 2009
You may think that the environmental problems we face are too great for us to do anything about. This book shows that there is something we can do.
It has some startling facts about the problems caused by plastic bags and why we should get rid of them. It then goes on to explain how you can remove plastic bags from your own community, what issues you may need to deal with and the potential solutions. A section of the book shows how other communities have been successful and the organisations and resources that can help.
A truly inspiring little book!

5.0 out of 5 stars An inspiring little read!, 27 Oct 2008
By India (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This is a wonderful book that made me want to buy a hundred copies and deliver them to every trader in my area!

It was learning about the devastating effects of plastic on our environment, health and marine life that started me and my family on our own 'zero waste' journey.

This book is inspirational, fast paced and leaves you with a sense of wanting to take ACTION. Many books leave you feeling that there is nothing you can do, but this book is different. After reading it you WILL be able to take action and make positive changes because you'll learn everything you need to know about setting up a successful 'ban the plastic bag' campaign.

As Rebecca Hosking (founder of the Modbury campaign) says, the task to convince others to change their habits is easier if you are informed.

In the book you'll get all the information you need, and gain advice from several pioneers who have set up their own campaigns. You'll find shocking statistics about plastic bags and begin to understand the message that we, as consumers, need to lead with action. Instead of waiting or Governments to make a move, you'll be empowered and inspired to take action yourself.

The book tells you all you need to know about setting up your own campaign, but if that sounds too daunting, you'll find information on other campaigns that you can join in with too.

The book is honest, which I admire - there is a section that will talk you through any potential pitfalls and speaks of problems other people have faced and how to keep the momentum of a campaign going.

You'll find out how to get funding, how to run meetings, set up steering groups and how to get the backing and support of others.

All in all it's a positive book with a great message; one that will easily move you into taking action yourself and making significant change in your part of the world.
