Product Description

Who was the only British Prime Minister to be assassinated? The demolition of the old London Bridge put an end to what famous tradition? Which philosopher caught a fatal chill returning from a predawn lesson given to Queen Christina of Sweden? What was the real name of Buffalo Bill? Which mutiny, leading to a war of independence, was provoked by the use of animal fat? What was smuggled from Alexandria to Venice in, it is said, a barrel of pork? What did Pope Innocent III outlaw, as a weapon of mass destruction? Who, on the first day of 1660, had the remains of a turkey for breakfast and began a new project?

Prepare to have your general knowledge tested by the best quizmaster in the business. Here are 2000 of the world's strangest and most stimulating questions, laid out in a series of thematic quizzes that cover art , literature, politics, sport, geography and history and span all the countries of the world. Bamber Gascoigne's fascination with knowledge is highly contagious and his answers give you the context you need to find out even more.

And as to the answers to the questions above -- well, you'll have to read the book...

About the Author

Bamber Gascoigne was the legendary quizmaster of University Challenge (where, very unusually, he wrote his own questions) for twenty-five years. His calm intelligence and urbane manner have been much imitated -- he was spoofed in Monty Python, The Young Ones and Red Dwarf -- but never equalled. He handed over the reins to a rather more irasible Jeremy Paxman in 1994 and now devotes most of his time to www.historyworld.net, an online history encyclopedia. He has also written and presented several landmark TV documentary series including The Christians, Victorian Values, Man and Music and The Great Moghuls and he is the author of some twenty books.

Bamber Gascoigne is a name that commands respect within the quiz world for his 25 year stint as the question master on University Challenge. So maybe I expected a little too much from this book. As quiz books go the questions are a little uneven, but on the whole they aren't at all bad. There's quite a spread of subjects, and I would say there are many more 'high culture' questions than is the norm. Each round has ten questions, which are linked by a particular theme. Ah, but here's the rub. You have to work out what the theme is for yourself, since it doesn't say so on the question page, only the answer page. I like the answer pages though, since there is a good attempt to actually explain why the answers are what they are, which is far from common amongst quiz books. Difficulty varies hugely between questions in the same round, but I would say that a good quizzer will average 7 or 8 correct answers per round.

So I find myself asking - why don't I like this quiz book more ? Partly because I think that a book of this size should deliver more than 2000 questions. Only 10 questions per page seems rather mean to me. Its more than that, though. Somehow I just haven't found the questions in this book to be quite as engaging as those in the two Magnus Magnusson's quiz books, for example. I can't quite put my finger on it, but with both of those books I couldn't put them down until I had worked through every quiz in them. I just didn't quite find it so with this. A few too many easy old chestnuts. Nonetheless, still a good resource for making quizzes.

Used this book to choose questions for a club quiz. Result.... I was not asked to do another. The questions are high grade and will have a limited audiance as a result.
