Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Balls is the third album from Cambridge, England quartet The Broken Family Band. Since they had recently fallen into an all-too-neat (read ‘all-too-limiting’) stereotype as an American-style ‘country band’, they set out on this album to prove the critics wrong and set the record straight. Piping everything from punk, pop, heavy metal and funk into their newly variegated sound, the foursome create a brimming tapestry that’s not only wilfully multi-flavoured but hums with the smug sheen of a band content with its studio abilities as well as its songwriting skills. And proud they should be; almost all the tracks here are diligently delivered, combining solid musicianship with an anything-goes philosophy and darkly amusing and occasionally romantic lyrics. Indelicately titled it may be, but Balls is no clanger.--Paul Sullivan

The Guardian, January 11th, 2006

"...a rollercoaster of blistering rhythms and itchy bass."

It only seems like five minutes ago that they released their last album. That was good. Can we have another in the next five minutes? Emotive as well as incredibly wry the Broken Family Band never disappoint in their quest to supply us with nu folk offerings about displacement and heartbreak.

Adams has the talent to write a never ending venting spleen about the human condition that you'd think would be tiresome after a while. Not so. Very much like the 'Mountain Goats' but more joyful in it's bitterness. A real talent on the UK music scene, buy and love.

Excellent Stuff 28 Feb 2006
Format:Audio CD
Apart from the brilliant songs, the real strength of this band is Steven Adams' wonderfully expressive voice; part Will Oldham, part Beck. There's a nice variation in tempo throughout the whole album too- from the heart-felt For Milton Mapes to the energetic, rocky Leonard Cohen cover Diamonds in the Mine.

The other thing I like is the ever so slightly unpolished sound. That isn't to say the musicianship isn't excellent, it's just that the jangly, rough-around-edges production works perfectly with the music.

The Broken Family Band get better & better with every album, whilst previous albums were merely superb, Balls takes the band to another level altogether.

In an age of hyper-hype for mediocre one-trick bands here is a group that combines Steven Adams exceptional songwriting talents with a raw, driven sound. The band drawing from influences such as country, heavy rock & good old fashioned straightforwards guitar pop.

Do yourself a favour buy this album & try to catch them live - you will not be dissapointed!
