I've been learning/playing the alto sax for just over 6 weeks and wanted to have a go at 'complete songs' rather than 'extracts' in my tutorial books. I chose 'ballads' because of their 'timing/tempo' (slower songs are easier to follow!) I managed to find information about the songs included in this book from 'googling' (Take note Amazon!!!!).

For those of you who are taking the time to read my comments, the songs are: Bridge Over Troubled Water, Bring Him Home, I Dreamed A Dream, Candle In The Wind, Don't Cry For Me Argentina, I Don't know how to love him, I know Him So Well, Imagine, Killing Me Softly With His Song, Nights In White Satin, One Day I'll Fly Away, Wonderful Tonight. There are also an addition 2 tracks with 'tuning notes' (concert Bb and concert A)

The songs are arranged in order of difficulty, and after being able to play all 12 songs, the player will have quite a good command of playing all the notes available within the Alto sax's range.

The accompanying CD backing tracks are very well produced with authentic sounding piano/band accompaniment (Not cheesy midi-synth backing). The 'backing band' appears on the left channel, while the melody appears on the right channel - so with stereo ajustable equipment, one can hear more or less (or none) of the melody as desired.

Within minutes of 'tuning up', I was able to start song #1 (Bridge Over...) with no dificulty at all. Great for a confidence boost! I'm sure that within a couple of weeks I'll have no trouble in going through all the songs. After that I'll be able to work more on phrasing and personal interpretation of the songs themselves.

3.0 out of 5 stars My thoughts on this book 10 Mar 2011
By kenny
Good book, but for me there are too many pieces that require high notes to be played, and as a beginner I struggle with them, and the the ones that don't need the high notes I can play. Although you have to be challenged when playing any musical instrument. I am working my way up to the high notes but it does not come easy. so I keep flicking past them. If you are past the beginner stage you will do fine. It seems that for example nights in white satin , you play one page great no problems then go onto the second page of the same song, and it might as well be a different piece, as it goes all over the place unless it is for a piano, Im not sure as a beginner what is going on. However you can easily play this piece and it does sound good. This book is what it says it is 12 ballads , so no tips just song music. Hope this helps

5.0 out of 5 stars Good choice 17 April 2014

I found this clear to follow. Bridge over troubled water, the first song in the book, was quite easily conquered and the rest seem to build up in difficulty. It's nice to play songs that you recognise, so many of these books have tunes made up by the authors and I don't find that so satisfactory. Also as they are full length rather than short pieces it builds up your breathing as well.

A good selection of tunes to play along to. Very useful for me to have the CD included. Some straightforward titles ranging up to quite challenging pieces.
