This recording, BALLADS FROM HER APPALACHIAN FAMILY TRADITION, is an absolute necessity for anyone interested in American roots music. This is no trivial claim. Jean Ritchie should be declared a national treasure. Her renditions of the Childe Ballades define the relationship between British folk music and Appalachian song. Ritchie has not only one of the prettiest pure voices of any genre, but her music is a beautiful specimen of what unalloyed mountain music really sounds like. You do yourself a disservice by not knowing this recording.
