Product Description

The Balanced Scorecard method is an analysis technique designed to translate an organization′s mission and vision statement and overall business strategies into specific, quantifiable goals, and to monitor the organization′s performance in achieving these goals. Much less technology driven then other analysis approaches, it analyzes an organization′s overall performance in four regards: financial analysis, customer service, productivity and internal analysis, and employee growth and satisfaction. Not a bad attempt at coralling together the basics of scorecards but it's very hard to focus on the message when the writing and proof-reading are so diabolical. Basic typos all over the place, intermittent use of punctuation, incorrect use of words - yes, there is a difference between distract and detract, not that these guys seem to recognise the fact. Overall, it has the feel of something cobbled together in a hurry to jump on the performance measure bandwagon - there are better written books out there for sure!

I was looking for a good intial description of balanced scorecards and the "Dummies" series genearlly provide an excellent start point. This book is the exception.

The book runs to 344 pages and needs three authors. One claims to have nearly completed his PhD in mangagement another has written "Writing Children's Books for Dummies". The third invites you to schedule a meeting with him or one of his associates. Not a good start.

In practical terms the overview is basically covered in the first chapter and certainly by the end of chapter 4 (page 72)they have really said all that is of interest. The rest of the book is better gleaned from other treatise on managment techniques.

The examples of dashboards would, in my opinion, confuse rather than elucidate - too much data; too little information.

I found the style condescending. The Introduction states that the authours assume that "you are a manager, executive, or other business laeder" yet at the end of the Introduction under "Where to go from here" we, the readers, are invited to "Simply turn the page and you're on your way". I think that their declared audience might just have grasped that basic principle of reading a book.

In summary a book that failed to grab my interest or respect. The authors would have done better if they had practiced part of what they preach i.e. understand their readers wants and expectations.

A good start point in the subject area 24 Jan 2008
By K. P. Turner - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I was a little disappointed with this book. This is an overview book of the subject area which cover the 4 legs quite well. I learned a handful of things I didn't know. If you don't know much about the area, this is a good starting book. Once you've read this book; if you are still interested you will probably want a book on consulting case studies where technique was applied. I don't know of such a book, but I'm looking!

How can you improve on something that you can't measure? This book provides all the simple answers needed for those of us who place a value on measuring and tracking business performance. It's been a long wait to find an author who can take the mystery out of "Balanced Scorecards". Thank You!

Managers, Executives and Project Managers Need to Read This Book 19 Mar 2009
By Dianna Sabo - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I purchased this book to expand my knowledge of goal setting and reporting for large projects as a consultant. If you are in a position to affect the bottom line in your business or if you are a consultant to other business managers, this book helps you to understand the steps, the philosophies, and the work involved in improving your business. It is well written, easy to read, and set up in such a way that you can skip around to different chapters to get some of the 'immediate information' for which you may be looking. The authors have done an excellent job in defining the acronyms which are used a lot in the management and consulting industry, so that is also a great help. Like all the Dummy series books, there are great cartoons, icons for key information and it makes some of the dull stuff a little more fun to digest. This would make a great gift for the newly promoted project manager or business manager in your family or circle of collegues.
