Product Description

CD Description

Sara Tavares was only 16 years old when she won two of Portugal’s most prestigious TV music contests. Born to second generation Cape Verdian immigrants, Sara grew up between two cultures. Initially known as a singer and composer of Gospel, Funk and Soul, she gradually incorporated more of her African music in her compositions. Her second album ‘Mi Ma Bô, produced by Parisian Lokua Kanza, reached gold in her native Portugal and was a mix of African rhythms and melodic pop songs. After a long wait of five years, finally her new album BALANCÊ has a UK release of 6th March. In this record produced by Sara herself, she wrote and composed all the songs and played many of the instruments. "The whole album is like little lullabies to myself," says Tavares. "All the messages are about self esteem, loving yourself, about liking what is different in you. About integrating all the parts of you." It is a beautiful record in which Sara shows herself to be a very talented contemporary singer/song writer who has managed to combine, in a subtle and honest way, contemporary music with her African roots. Tracks: Balancê / Bom Feeling / Lisboa Kuya / Ess Amor / One Love / Poka Terra (featuring Melo D) / Amor é / Dam Bô / Guisa / Planeta Sukri (featuring Boy Gê Mendes) / Novidadi / Muna Xeia / De Nua (featuring Ana Moura).

I first heard Sara singing "Bom Feeling" on the Jools Holland show, so I bought the albumn on the strength of one song. I haven't regretted. Highlights include the upbeat "One Love" and the hauntingly beautiful "De Nua". "Poka Terra" is a superb exercise in complicated rhythm, executed effortlessly. I challenge anyone to dislike this album.

Bom Feeling Indeed! 19 April 2008
Format:Audio CD
I first saw this in a store. Like I do with all new music, I noted the name and checked it out online. Within a few minutes of hearing the samples, I knew I had to get it.

Born in Portugal but heavily influenced by both her native Cape Verde and Europe, Sara Tavares has crafted a piece of musical magic that is sure to enchant you a little more by the day.

Stand out tracks for me are Balance, Bom Feeling and One Love.

from the singer who represented Portugal at Eurovision in 1994. But this album is a long way from Eurovision. It's authentic and fresh: playful on the title track, and almost heartbreakingly gentle on "Guisa" and "Muna Xeia."

This CD marks Sara Tavares' arrival as a mature singer/songwriter, and as a musician too. There are shades of Astrud Gilberto here, and also of a young Miriam Makeba. But it's original throughout, and if this recording is any indication then Sara Tavares is definitely an artist to watch out for.
