This is the first review I have ever bothered to write on Amazon; this album is superb and deserves as wide an audience as possible.
Kate Tempest is a young, white, female rapper from South London. She is also a dazzling and stunningly articulate poet (search Youtube for her videos "Renegade" and "Teens Speech" for examples). She quotes major influences as The Wu Tang Clan and William Blake.
This is the debut album of her band, The Sound of Rum. With the tough, gritty nature of London life as a backdrop, Tempest's lyrics are intelligent, inspirational, insightful, beautiful and funny.
If you thought Eminem could spit a fast, complex rap then wait till you hear Tempest. This girl is incredibly talented and due to go a long way. The band are fantastic, the production slick and every song is strong.
The stand-out track for me is Concrete Pigeon; on which Tempest is joined by another excellent rapper, Polar Bear. This is, literally, one of the best songs I've heard in years, in any genre of music.
Buy this album! You will not regret it. I've listened to it hundreds of times since I bought it. And I'm not even a rap fan.
