Product Description

The infamous charge of the Light Brigade and the heroic courage of the Thin Red Line. The story of the Battle of Balaclava. It was one of the most famous battles in military history. The Battle of Balaclava was distinguished by three celebrated acts the heroic courage of The Thin Red Line, the dashing bravery of the Heavy Brigade and, of course the utter disaster which befell the Light Brigade as it made it¹s infamous charge. It was a day during which the key players in the drama had a vital bearing on the outcome the uncertain Raglan, the feuding Lucan and Cardigan, the excitable Captain Nolan. Featuring special dramatised eye-witness¹ accounts and reconstructions, period imagery and 3D mapping techniques, this video is a dramatic record of the notorious Charge of the Light Brigade. The programme also features extensive footage from the Tony Richardson masterpiece The Charge of the Light Brigade to illustrate the ebb and flow of the fighting during a truly momentous day in the history of warfare. Narrated by Brian Blessed. Featuring expert comment and analysis by Dr David Chandler, the world s foremost military historian and former Head of War Studies at Sandhurst.

One for you DVD list. 29 Mar 2007
By BryBo
A great DVD on the Battle of Balaclava with a brief history why the war was happening and ending on the Charge of the Light Brigade. The history is well written and very informative including the Charge of the Heavy Brigade and the Thin Red Line (although it does not include the controversy about whether the Turkish Soldiers helped or not) and includes words from soldiers who fought during the war.

The maps and graphics were very enjoyable but I found the music distracting from the whole DVD as you have to re-watch it in order to forget the music which is distracting as well. I also thought the quiz was good but it does not take the same format as most other DVDs of the same type. The gallery was not really worth putting in as they took some of the film in this part and the maps of the battle and uniforms of the brigades involved would have been better.

Never the less it is well worth buying and is worth the money but maybe it could have ended in the whole war rather than just the charge.

Balaclava documentary 16 Feb 2010
Having been fascinated by the war in Crimea, I was looking forward to a documentary on the subject. The DVD however turned out to rely heavily on the remarkable film "The Charge of the Light Brigade" made in 1968 by Tony Richardson. This in turn is faithfully based on Cecil Woodham Smith's book "The Reason Why". "Balaclava 1854" was a disappointment.

A great dvd based on the Battle at Balaclava, well worth buying if you enjoy historical battles. It uses re-enactments and clips from film from the 80's, excellent and I am looking at rest of series
