5.0 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Read 27 April 2013
By Nikoran
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Bakuman shows us the story of two young, aspiring manga artists trying to hit it big in the famous Shonen Jump. It follows their triumphs and their many fails. It goes into great detail on the different categories and how to make the best piece of work out there. It is done by the same duo who created Death Note and they do a great job again with this series. Definitely a must if you enjoy slice of life mangas or are interested in how manga artists and writers create manga.

I saw a good review of this book and had some change spare.. So I went for it... From the creators of Death Note Bakuman once again is a manga hit! It's interesting to see the process between making a manga etc.. and the story of it is just plain fun! I recommend anyone to try it, or at least look at a video review on YouTube.

5.0 out of 5 stars PURE ART ! 5 Feb 2011
By B. Joan
Format:Paperback
"Bakuman is a pretty unique story. I've never read or heard of any other story like it."

Bakuman is a romance/comedy/shonen manga about mangaka. It is original because it shows the life of the people who create manga. This isn't just a manga, it is pure art. This manga has a good story and amazing art.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some Good Elements 24 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Although it does have some good elements (Mashiro's uncle being one of them), in my view Bakuman is neither as well written nor as well drawn as Hikaru No Go - a manga which, in some senses, it seeks to emulate. However, it is certainly better written than either Ral and Grad or the commercially very successful Death Note.

One of the curious things about volume one of Bakuman is that in the first half of the manga the writer shows himself to have quite a highly developed sense of humour, but this quality is almost completely absent from the second half. It is as though the editor stepped in and told him to remove it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Weak and behind the times 18 May 2011
Format:Paperback
I read the first few pages of this online, and as I liked what I saw, and the concept appealed to me, I went ahead and bought it. However, having just finished it, I was thoroughly disappointed.

The main issue for me was the horrifying, shameless and very consistent sexism. I'll admit, it's not what I expected when I thought I was buying a manga about two kids trying to become successful manga creators. I know that in Japan equality of the sexes might not be as far progressed as it should be, but I've only ever come across hints of it in other manga series. Here, it's not something that's alluded to in passing on occasion, but it's a consistent theme, an integral part of what the manga is.

Here are a few examples. Moritaka's mother objects to her son becoming a manga artist (and with good reason), but when she runs it by her husband (who is, apparently, too important to talk to Moritaka himself), he tells her to tell him "Let him do it. Men have dreams women can never understand." Which she goes and says to Moritaka, clearly demeaned. So apparently, women are too dumb/selfish/narrow-minded to understand these great aspirations of men, and of course cannot have such aspirations themselves. Not to mention the fact that the mother's opinion is overruled. Why? She's a woman.

This brings me to another major point, and probably one of the most offensive things in the manga. In a little speech by Akito, he sums up the 'fact', being the genius that he is, that Azuki, Moritaka's love interest, doesn't get high grades because she knows girls shouldn't do that. And it gets worse. "Azuki naturally knows a girl should be graceful and polite... and because she is a girl, she should be earnest about things and get average grades.
