Book Description

30 May 2003 0754812383 978-0754812388
Nothing equals the satisfaction of home baking, and this technique-led collection contains over 400 recipes to inspire the home baker. It takes you through all the processes from keeping your kitchen stocked with the right ingredients and equipment to baking blind, making a lattice top for a pie and mixing the perfect choux pastry. The recipes range from simple shortbread to the more complicated lemon coconut layer cake. Also included is a section on breads and bread making - from everyday loaves to classic international specialities. A comprehensive techniques section covers all the equipment, ingredients and skills you will need: try making a sun-dried tomato plait as a modern accompaniment to a steaming bowl of pasta, or prepare a tempting teatime treat such as Italian almond biscotti, or pumpkin pie. With recipes for biscuits, bars, buns, tea breads, cakes, gateaux, pies, tarts, low-fat cakes and bakes, everyday breads and classic bread recipes, this book is a one stop reference that should meet all your baking needs.

Product Description

Review

There's a good reason why supermarkets use a bread-scented aroma in their aisles - it recalls childhood days in the kitchen with mother with homemade bread in the oven and cakes and biscuits cooling on the side. Although today most bread is bought sliced and cakes packaged in cellophane, there is no denying that homebaked treats go down better and are more satisfying all round. This celebration of baking by Martha Day covers breads such as traditional Welsh bara brith together with the more exotic banana and cardamom; muffins in all forms; cakes from luscious walnut layer cake to the unusual lemon yoghurt ring; pies and tarts from traditional treacle to Georgia peanut butter; and cookies and bars encompassing drop cookies to shaped biscuits. Produced in true Lorenz style, it is an extremely attractive, well laid-out book. Special techniques are well illustrated and clearly explained whilst the luscious photographs almost make you think the delicious treats contained herein are real and edible. For anyone who loves baking and enjoys giving friends and family a treat, this offers a wonderful range of traditional and modern recipes to suit all tastes. - Lucy Watson

I picked up this book in my local library, flicked through the pages, and thought "Yes! I need this book asap". There are recipes given here for what seems like every cake / biscuit / bread you might possibly want to bake, and every one has a gorgeous picture to illustrate what it OUGHT to look like. Even if you don't think of yourself as a mad, keen baker then you should buy this book - I have, I've tried a few of the recipes, and they worked with no hassle whatsoever. What else does anyone want?

5.0 out of 5 stars My favourite baking book 16 Dec 2008
I am a big big fan of baking, but cannot claim to yet be a master of my kitchen. I've tried a good couple of dozen recipes from this book since I've had it, and although there have been a few not-quite-perfects, there have certainly been no disasters, and the majority of things have worked really very well. Normally I'm sceptical about how useful the photos given will be (this edition boasts 1500), but actually here they're really good for guiding you over some of the less obvious bits. It could be a good or a bad thing, depending on the kind of baker you are, that there isn't e.g. one standard recipe for shortcrust pastry used throughout or one standard tin size used - it keeps you on your toes, but it does mean that if one thing doesn't work you have many alternative options. I'm a particular fan of the Farmhouse biscuits (right at the beginning) and the treacle tart (p209).

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Baking Book Ever 21 Sep 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this book when I saw it in my local supermarket. I have made so many cakes, biscuits, breads etc and without exception, all turned out to be delicious. I have since ordered further copies for my family and friends from Amazon and they all agree it is well written and easy to follow. My only gripe was that the instructions for using yeast were misleading in each recipe. To use correctly, you MUST read the paragraph on yeast at the beginning of the book. I feel there should have been a reference to this paragraph in each of the recipes.
