Do not buy this book if you are a novice, your confidence will be shot to pieces!!
I brought this book from a book club at my daughters school. I'm a good cook with lots of cooking books, some of the things looked really tasty in here and i couldn't wait to try them out.
I started with a complicated recipe that went horribly wrong, much to my wife amusement. Of cause i blamed the book, but my wife was having none of it, so i tried some of the simple stuff to show i was not at fault.
First up Cinnamon Chocolate Shortbread, my daughter has just made shortbread at school, it's that easy.... Oh dear another disastrous outcome. Straight away you can see there is too much butter compared to flour. Nice picture though, i wonder what recipe they followed.
Next up Chocolate Chip Muffins, not the hardest thing in the world to bake. What a complete mess, i don't even know where to start. I think you would be better off using plain flour with some baking powder, not self-raisin. There is way to much milk, it was a milky mess!! i added another 100g of self-raisin flour just to stop the chocolate chips sinking to the bottom. The whole recipe is a mess, too much butter, milk and chocolate chips compared to flour.
My oven is not at fault, i have an oven thermometer, and other cook books work fine. My scales are digital and in good working order.
The 5 star reviews were probably written by people working for the publishing house. Or people who like looking at the pictures in cooking books (some fabulous pictures in here) but never get round to making anything. I would like to know what they baked to give it 5 stars?
What a waste of time, money and ingredients.
