I love American baking for 2 main reasons. The generous portion sizes and the fact that you just want to attack them with any eating implement you have to hand (fingers are a personal favourite!)The Outsider Tart guide to all sweet things American and utterly awesome does not disappoint. So far I have made a total of 4 things (since I purchased my copy all of 2 days ago and I physically had to stop myself heading to the oven to produce more). The recipes are clear, easy to follow and what's more they are incredibly fun. As an enthusiast and keen tester of baked goods, of books I have purchased recently it was nice for this one to actually put the FUN back into baking. (The fact that it contains not one but THREE forms of measurements means there is not one element of effort I have to waste).
As for the rest of the book, there is chapter upon chapter of sweet delights ranging all the way from brownies and bars (the way they were always meant to be) to whoopie pies (I would attach a picture if mine lasted that long) all the way to frostings and free spirits, a chapter dedicated to the baker who is not satisfied with a mere triple layer chocolate cake but wants to go all the way to 6 to satisfy their chocoaholic cravings in the form of the 'blackout cake'.
The photos look as scrumptious as the cakes themselves and the stories accompanying each and every treat shows what a huge amount of heart and personality goes into each and every one. This book is welcome holiday to what wholesome American baking should always be. 'Baking in America' has a very welcome place in this Brit's kitchen (and every single one of my friends and family's Christmas stocking).
