Chris Isaak ~ Baja Sessions

Amazon.co.uk

Chris Isaak's Baja Sessions was inspired by a surfing trip the singer took with his band to the Baja California section of Mexico. As the salt in their hair dried in the sun, the four musicians sat around with acoustic guitars and a small drum set, and played some tunes from Isaak's previous albums, some of his unrecorded originals, and some of his favourite old songs by the likes of Roy Orbison, Gene Autry, and Arthur Lyman. The quartet so enjoyed the laid-back, mostly acoustic, Spanish-tinged flavour of these holiday jams that when they got home to the Bay Area, they recreated them in the studio. Baja Sessions is like an Unplugged album, except the sun-drenched, south-of-the-border mood gives these remakes a far fresher twist than most such projects. --Geoffrey Himes

Isaac apparently produced this album in Mexico after completing his previous 'Forever Blue' , this in contrast is an upbeat romantic album and new fans will love it as much as old , and why ?
Simply because it exudes romance. Isaac is the messiah of cover tracks he pays homage to Roy Orbisons 'Only The Lonely' and Dean Martins 'Return to Me' is a beautifully crafted track that serenades you into a pit of romantic escapism. This album is reminiscent of 'San Francisco Days' and both are 'beach albums' perfect for chilling out next to the sea with a tequila and bronzed babes playing bat n ball (badly).
Its also a very consistent album and has the theme tune 'Two Hearts' which was chosen as the track for Tarantinos 'True Romance' he has covered dozens of movies and i wonder how many people have heard and loved Chris Isaac music without realizing who the hell he is.
Backed by his band 'Silvertone' Isaak is a lot more 'chilled' in this album, his trademark pitch singing and high pitched vocals are out, instead we get a group of naturally gifted musicians enjoying what they do best, and doing a damn good job at it too, I have always admired the way Isaak covers other artists tracks, he enhances and modifies the music and singing perfectly without killing the song, their are very few artists nowadays who can do that, without decimating the 'original' tracks.
Lets not forget Chris Isaak is 47, looks cooler than ever, sounds cooler than ever, this in short is a rockin good, salacious album from an artist in the true mould of Elvis / Orbison, you'll love this album like you love 5.30pm on a friday as you leave work.

Recently revisited Chris's work due to falling CD prices and picked up this excellent record. The tracks tend to play to the artists strengths of slower songs and there is some excellent understated guitar throughout. Highly recommend this in addition to the "best of" records

This album has a great feel about it. It is so laid back you can feel your worries slipping away as you listen to it. You have Chris Issak's distinctive voice and some real chilled music behind it. A great album for fans or new comers alike. This is for when the party is winding down!!!

I really enjoyed this album. If you like Chris Isaak then you'll like this CD, I originally purchased it for a specific track, but was really pleased with the whole sound. Every track is really good and a very plesant to listen to there was not one track on the album that I didn't like, even the few tracks that he sings that were originally done by other artists are as good sung by him.

I discovered Chris Isaak a few months ago. I now have five cd's, Baja Sessions is the purest in many ways, whilst my favourite is Always Got Tonight. But Baja Sessions is fabulous - almost perfect with production and performance second to none.

For me good production values are critical and always present on his work which is why his music is always rich and has a lot going on. You can listen over and over again and never tire of it. Listen to Baja on a good hi-fi system - not iPod - and be blown away by the shimmering performance.

Hers a tip for you Isaac fans , in the same year he released 2 tracks similar to the ones on this album , so check out his 2 songs on the Kevin Costner film soundtrack 'Perfect World'. ****BAJA SESSIONS IS A MUST FOR ANYONE WHO WHO HAS COOL TASTE , ITS MODERN MIXED WITH OLD IN THE STYLE OF ELVIS / ROY ORBISON.
