Product Description

Review

... a brilliant snapshot of a terrifying, treacherous period in world history as told through the eyes of a daring young man who not only had the resourcefulness and smarts to survive for three months behind enemy lines, but had the foresight to write it all down, in splendid detail, as soon as he returned to his lifelong home at 115th Street and Longwood Drive in Chicago. --Daily Southtown

Product Description

A daredevil pilot in the famed 352nd Fighter Squadron, the author of this remarkable memoir bailed out of his burning Mustang two days after D-Day and was launched on a thrilling adventure on the ground in Occupied France.

After months living and fighting with the French Resistance, Fahrenwald was captured by the Wehrmacht, interrogated as a spy, and interned in a POW camp--and made a daring escape just before his deportation to Germany. Nothing diminished this pilot's talent for spotting the ironic humor in even the most aggravating or dangerous situations--nor his penchant for extracting his own improvised and sometimes hilarious version of justice.

A suspenseful WWII page-turner and an outrageously witty tale of daring and friendship, this book brings to vivid life the daily bravery, mischief, and intrigues of fighter pilots, Resistance fighters, and other Allies in the air and on the ground. The Greatest Generation at its best!

The author recorded his swashbuckling adventures at age twenty-four, after his discharge and return to the States. He spent his life in the business world and never again put pen to paper; but his immediate reminiscence of his wartime experience reveals a rare literary talent.

4.0 out of 5 stars Flyboy, fly! 5 July 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is one of the most original books ever written about war in that it focusses almost entirely on the characters around the author whilst using the war mainly as a backdrop. Told in the mid-west vernacular of the time, this book is sharply observed and descriptively written with wit and humour on every page, yet it never loses the tension of the moment. I was tempted to give it a five for its sheer originality - enjoy!!

5.0 out of 5 stars One helluva story! 6 July 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Very well written and very entertaining personal account of a 'fly boy' who shot himself down behind the lines 2 days after D-Day! Very amusing but poignant and some important historical material in here about what life on the run from the Nazis and life in Occupied France was like in the weeks after the invasion: highly recommended

A very good story of escape and evasion in France. A remarkable tale told of the resistance movement's aid and of normal frenchfolk`s kindness and bravery.
A brave pilot and his story had me unable to put it shown

2.0 out of 5 stars Bale out over Normandy 20 Nov 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Disappointing, too much Boy's own hero style. Could have benefited with a bit more pre-op build up
did not feel as if I knew the the pilot too pre-occupied with boozing at every opportunity suggesting an immature man.
Not one I would reccommend

To far fetched I lived through the war years and can not believe it was true . It makes the German army seem idiots which they were not

This is an incredible story - this guy was brave bordering on crackers. But personally I found the writing style a bit irritating after a while - so much so, that it distracted me slightly from what was a quite staggering tale of bravery and gritty survival.
