I saw the video for the third track on MTV in my room on holiday and found it haunting. When waiting to leave Turkey this CD was playing in Istanbul airport and it made my mind up. Despite being entirely in Turkish, this is still very accessible stuff with a surprising range of music. Eskidendi.. is one of the most gorgeous songs ever and if someone put English lyrics to it would be a huge hit for Shirley Bassey. Perisanim Simdi (the single) has amazingly odd time signatures and a performance to wrench your heart. There are disco beats, clearly comic songs (even if I cannot understand the words) and even songs that sound a bit countrified but all with an eastern slant. No bad tracks, although I could do without the remix of Sanima Inanma but just think of it as a bonus track.

Aksu has a fantastic, worn out voice. Imagine a Turkish Marianne Faithful but with considerably more singing talent. When she sings you understand what she is singing about, even if you don;t understand the lyrics.

Take the gamble and buy this. It will quickly become your favourite album.

Turkey's "Queen of Pop" apparently. Most of the songs on this album feel earthier, deeper and more traditional than that tag would suggest. Interestingly, a lot of the music is more Mediterranean than Middle Eastern in flavour. Her voice is gruff but warm and she really does tear at your heart when sings a song like "Bahane". Alternatively, "Ikili Delilik" is a great uptempo number.
