Product Description

The new release, Bahamas Is Afie, is the first self-produced album from the Ontario-based musician. With this record he pursued a far more complex sound than on prior releases and is responsible for the majority of the instrumentation. The album follows 2011's Barchords, which was praised for being a reserved yet melodically rewarding exploration of relationships and heartache by The New Yorker. SPIN recently premiered the first pre-release track from the album, All The Time, saying Bahamas distills his brand of breezy soul...with summer-ready falsetto harmonies that float over a distorted riff, before ending with a quick solo, a move that reminds this laidback Canuck can shred.

Format: Audio CD
I saw a review of this album in the Sunday Times by Canadian artist Afie Jurvanen and thought I would give it a go. I have not been disappointed. Afie obviously spends a lot of time on his song-writing, for these are great lyrics with original tunes - no sign of being in anybody elses mould here, Afie is a true innovator. But the arrangements are also incredibly inventive, without being distracting - Afie seems to know how to come up with just the right sound to enhance the message of the song.

I'll just highlight some of my favourite songs on the album.

Waves is a great opening track. Laid-back percussion, light strumming guitar. Later a female chorus, ethereal and light. This track sets the tone for the whole album. This is not in-your-face music which will stop you doing anything else, but if you put it on the player you will find yourself being drawn back to it to listen to the fine details which keep attracting your attention.

In Like a Wind we hear a lush slide electric guitar over simple acoustic finger-picking over a song with minimalistic lyrics which somehow say it all in just a few words.

Ih Half Mine we have a pacey, relaxed song with piano backing and occsional guitar strums to fill out the sound.

The tune of All Time Favourite has an almost oriental tune, with backing singers giving an atmospheric accomapaniment, soon joined with violins. A great song which follows the advice of a friend of Afie quoted in a recent interview, "when you sing you should assume you're laying next to a lover and whispering into their ear with their head next to you on a pillow".

I love Bitter Memories, a simple song with a sort of Delta Blues guitar track which could have been played by Mississippi John Hurt!

This album is the friggin bomb, a total knee scraper. I love the lyrics but what makes this album is the sound (If you don't believe me listen to the face warping guitar solo on All The Time). I've been playing it again and again and again and it just keeps getting better. Listen to Bahamas is Afie while you run, while you do the dishes, while you skate, while you shop, while you sunbathe, while you regular bathe, it's a transcendental tear in the fabric of pop music, it's a cure for the psychosomatic, it's cold beer in a heatwave, and it's the best thing you'll listen to this year. CD comes with a nice little poster of Afie.

Pink Strat still remains my favorite Bahamas album 9 Sept. 2014

Pink Strat still remains my favorite Bahamas album. This album is super good though. I gave ti four stars because I would give Pink Strat 5. You can tell that the artist has grown musically and incorporates a lot more into his music in terms of the sound. Lyrically the songs can be very engaging. I can interpret a lot of the songs to have meaning or be applicable to my own life. Like all of Bahamas music there is a lot of guitar. I bought this album because I buy everything the man puts out. But the singles, per usual, grabbed my attention before the album was released and really goaded me into getting the MP3 version of the album. I was not surprised, as I have come to expect this, to find that I enjoy a lot of other songs more than the singles that initially grabbed my attention. If you like Bahamas, buy this album. If you've never heard of the guy, try Pink Strat as well.

The hits just keep on comin' 13 Nov. 2014

I was not immediately a fan of all songs on this album even though I've loved Banahas' first two albums, but after a couple run throughs I was hooked. Bahamas keep turning out the hits and we were able to catch a live show of theirs in Chicago shortly after this release...unreal. If you like their last two albums, you're sure to love this one as well.

He did it again!! I think the thing I like the best about this album is that it's just different enough. He didn't try to go too far from why we all love his music. Absolutely a great collection and Afie is quickly becoming one of my all time favorite artists! Thank you so much!

How to buy an album heard from a live concert, and get a totally different sounding album. 16 Dec. 2014

A very strange sounding band in a good way. I think I could Pigeon hole this in the genre of "Canadian alternative, country, folk, western styled, singing".I don't know what to say about it,slightly over polished? I listen to it, but its not for everyone that's for sure. By the way if you think listening to them on the "Conan show you tube", will help you, you're wrong. The studio produces songs differently than the live performances. The song that sold me about the album and heard on the Conan Snow, I couldn't find it initially, and had to re-listen to the show to pick it out. After which I couldn't believe the difference. Now would I have bought it if I had known how different studio was from live. My answer is NO. But I still give it 3 stars cause of the "E for Effort".They are on the right track.
