4.0 out of 5 stars Second Story of Simon Leonidovich, Hi-Tech Courier 14 April 2005
By APRICOT - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This is the second story of Simon Leonidovich, the hi-tech courier who made a brilliant debut in "The Courier". Kyra, the adult daughter of billionaire Jake Rynerson, is kidnapped. Simon is retained by Jake to deliver the ransom. However, it is highly possible that once the kidnapper gets the money, he will kill not only the hostage but also the courier. What is worse, the suspicion arises that someone close to Jake works with the kidnapper.

The first half of this book was rather slow-paced, but the latter half was extremely thrilling and I could hardly put down the book. I love the first novel "The Courier" better because of several small reasons. For example, the hi-tech gadget of this book is much enhanced, but I like the familiar Internet technology of the first novel better. And I find the subject (the fatal diet pill) more intriguing and the characters (especially Retnuh, the psycho villain) more interesting in the first novel. However, that's just a matter of my personal liking, and I highly appreciate this second novel is not a rehash of the first novel.

One thing dissapoints me. The last chapter is dated on Monday 24th November 11:08 and the epilogue is dated on Monday 24th November 05:53. I expected this time-back would have a significant meaning, but the epilogue is just a later-on story and the time-back seems to be a simple misprint. It's a killjoy. I don't know who is to blame, but please be more careful.

4.0 out of 5 stars engaging thriller 28 July 2004
By Harriet Klausner - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Though pregnant (and divorced), Dr. Kyra Rynerson-Saladino visits the Galapagos Island archipelago to honor her retiring mentor septuagenarian Elsworth Marshall. However, one of the donors Peruvian land owner Luis Acosto needs help for his four year old daughter who was bitten by a bushmaster snake. Elsworth gets Kyra, who flew her own plane here to take father and child to a hospital. En route, Luis abducts Kyra, daughter of the wealthy billionaire Big Jake.

Though estranged from his daughter because of his leaving her mom years ago, Jake is desperate to bring his beloved child home safely. He hires a reluctant "birthday boy" Simon "Bagman" Leonidovich to "pay" the kidnappers. However, the South American abduction expert Leo Geske paints quite a dangerous picture depending on who snatched Kyra as kidnappings have become a major enterprise in South America. As Simon begins the extraction, he realizes a member of Big Jake's inner circle is partnering with the kidnapper; he just prays that it is not Caitlin Wells, who he is falling in love with.

BAGMAN is an engaging thriller that hooks the reader the moment that Kyra realizes she has been abducted until the final confrontations as Simon is not sure whether Geske or Caitlin is the partner. Though "Luis" is too stereotyped as a cruel abusive South American kidnapper and no information surfaces on the child once the seizure occurs, fans will enjoy the heart pumping thriller. Jay MacLarty delivers a fast-paced winner that will send fans seeking Simon's previous appearance as THE COURIER.
