Who now remembers that Baghdad (and all of Iraq) was once a great center of Jewish life, and that Jews were well assimilated in the Iraqi community? If you are curious about this important Sephardi Jewish community (many members of which migrated to Israel in the early 1950's), this book will inform you pleasantly. My only complaint is the author's tendency to mention so many VIPs with whom he had only marginal contact.

This loving description of the final years of the Iraqi Jewish community and culture was a joy to read! I wish I could find a copy in Arabic to give to some of my friends whose English is limited.
