4.0 out of 5 stars If you're lucky, you might get a chunky bit... 21 Jan 2006
Peter "Lord of the Rings" Jackson's first commercial movie release was made on a minuscule budget and with more than a little help from his friends, not to mention mum and dad. It is undeniably a crudely amateurish zombie-populated gore-fest, in the nascent gross-out style that Jackson would push to its ultimate gory conclusion in his more polished next release - the truly inspired Braindead.
The plot of Bad Taste is recycled from umpteen corny old American B movies from the middle of the last century - aliens have landed in a remote part of the country, with the aim of exploiting humanity for nefarious ends. A small group of humans cotton onto what's happening and set out to save planet Earth.
The standard of acting is hardly Oscar material; the dozen or so actors (no actresses!) are recycled time and time again; the sound and soundtrack are very basic and the special effects are mostly crude and ridiculous. So why does it work and why has Bad Taste acquired such cult status? Quite simply because it is incredibly entertaining! The outrageous visual gags and often inspired one-liners (delivered in deadpan manner more often than not) provide a whole series of laugh-out-loud moments. Some of my favourites being the ongoing effects of Derek's (Jackson) traumatic head injury, the machine-gun firing literally through the body (didn't Jeunet pinch that idea in Alien 4?), the aliens dropping out of the tree in great number following a volley of shots from one of our heroes, Robert's (Jackson again) throat-cutting gag, the serving of the "gruel" (I defy anyone not to feel queasy the first time they see that!) and, of course, the gross-out "born-again" final sequence.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why can't aliens be friendly... 17 Mar 2011
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Where to begin about Bad Taste? probably best to set the scene -
Human flesh is set to be the latest taste sensation to hit the galaxy. The aliens mission is to pack up some tasty samples (a whole town) in cardboard boxes and take them back to be turned into a variety of fast-food delicacies. Their plan was well planned down to the last detail, but the plan had not allowed for the intervention of the "Astro-Investigation & Defense Service" (AIDS) or "the boys" - four incompetent bloodthirsty head bangers whose only common interest is to destroy all invaders until they are well and truly destroyed!
If that does not make for a good film I have no idea what on earth (or the moon) does!
Bad taste is exciting from start to finish and it's easy to see the effort that must have gone into it. It doesn't run out of steam, at all. It also doesn't take itself at all seriously, at all. This doesn't mean it's a "so bad it's good" movie because it's not. When it's bad, it's because it wants to be bad.
The script is verging on perfect with brilliant one liners like the world famous "I'm a Derek...Derek's don't run". But it's literally packed with them. Such as..

..when Derek is dead (or is he?), after diving off a cliff onto the rocks, and sea gulls are flying around him & eating his brains, one of the other boys says "who will look after his aviary now...birds are the only thing he could relate to".

..after one of them shoots off an aliens head, Derek (who is dribbling from watching this) says "Jeez, I'd hate to be the poor bastard that has to clear that up".

Format:VHS Tape
This is a great movie, the first full length feature film to be directed by Peter Jackson - the director behind the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Not only did he direct it, he also starred in it as TWO of the major characters and funded much of the film with his own money. This film was made on a VERY low budget, which shows, but it's still a superb movie.
The plot revolves around a group of none-too-bright aliens who have landed on earth and are planning to sell the human race as fast food on their home planet. Earth's first line of defence against these evil extra terrestrials is "THE BOYS": Oz, Frank, Barry and thier klutzy leader Derek (Played by Peter Jackson himself).
"The one thing the aliens hadn't counted on was Derek...and Dereks don't run!"
The battle between The Boys and the aliens is very bloody and very funny. This film is very gory indeed and is not suitable for younger audiences, but the violence is more slapstick than anything else. If you have seen Peter Jackson's third movie "Braindead" (AKA "Dead Alive") then you will find this film has a very similar brand of humour.
This film is the ultimate in "Gross-out" humour and I suggest you see it if you have the opportunity. If you liked Braindead, BUY THIS VIDEO RIGHT NOW! I would also recommend this film to anyone who likes Zombie films.

5.0 out of 5 stars Its bad taste but its a bloody good film. 27 Sep 2005
Bad Taste is one of the most entertaining action movies I've ever seen. Its cool, funny, gory and highly entertaining that is hard not to like. The music is great and re-memorable (many movies arent.) The low budget effects are great and you start to realize that the crew had to go through years of filming to create this movie. So a lot of hard work was done to make this movie.
The movie is a little slow in parts but can easily be forgiven by the amount of action that happens later in the movie. The actors are great the atmosphere of the film is great and the movie itself is extremly good fun.
Defiently one of Peter Jackson's bests. Why did he ever make Lord of the Rings apart from the big money? We'll never know but one thing we do know is Bad Taste is an enjoyable film and who needs LOTR when you got Jackson's horror comedies.
Watch Bad Taste and you'll see how good movies were before big budget effects.
