"Bad Reputation" was a repackaged reissue of Jett's debut album and it is a first class record. While her masterwork is "I Love Rock and Roll", "Bad Reputation" comes a darn close second. It is a mixture of fine original songs and covers (this enhanced version also includes bonus tracks and vintage live performance footage when entered into a computer) that contain all the classic Jett trademarks: electrifying rock and roll and Jett's growling, attacking vocals. It should be noted that, this being a pre-Blackhearts record, the backing is provided by a who's who of punk and new wave talents including Dee Dee Ramone, Clem Burke from Blondie and Steve Jones and Paul Cook of the Sex Pistols.

The covers on the album are truly outstanding with a hyperactive version of the Isley Brothers's "Shout" and two brilliant covers of Gary Glitter glam standards, "Do You Wanna Touch Me" and "Doing Alright With the Boys". As a bonus track there is a cover of "Call Me Lightning" by the Who which Jett sings in a soft high voice and provides a totally unexpected dimension to her singing. But it is the original songs on the album that really stand out. They feel like heavier versions of songs that could have been written twenty five years prior to the recording and showcase some excellent songwriting which Jett was a part of. Of the standout tracks, "Bad Reputation" is a dirtier sequel to "Summertime Blues" by Eddie Cochran; "You Don't Know What You've Got" has a fantastic melody-harmony hook chorus with some of Jett's most biting singing on the verses; and "You Don't Own Me" is a clever piano-led ballad that explodes into a rather epic anthemic song. To highlight these songs is not to say, however, that the remaining songs on the record are filler; it is a very impressive collection.

Fantastic debut album from Joan Jett and The Blackhearts. This is the album that Joan put together after being turned down by many record labels after The Runaways went their separate ways. Well, too bad for them cuz JJ and The Blackhearts are still rockin' out more than 30 years later. A must buy for any true JJ fans.
