Casey is back with a vengeance - to put herself in the line of fire, and to face her ultimate fears in order to bring to justice the killers of a young former junkie woman, and to recover her son in time for him to bid his dying grandmother goodbye. In the process, she might, just might find a new love of her life, and to finally reach an emotional closure on her past relationship with Burly. Along the way, enter an addict kitten, a six foot long plexiglass hot dog, a bunch of female prisoners, and a Rambo-style military compound leader with a heart of gold (to mention a few...) - don't ask, read the story - it's worth it.
Still - while Casey is Casey at her best, the plot line kind of fizzles - Casey follows an intriguing lead, agrees to go undercover in prison (in what must be the most undercooked law enforcement plan ever...) and discovers what was pretty much expected - a bunch of corrupted guys did a number of bad things for reasons rather vague (other than monetary gain or pure sadistic pleasure). Some ends get tied in, most don't. What is missing is an up close and personal look at the villain(s) - something always present in all previous Katy Munger's novels. At the same time, I thoroughly enjoyed Casey (as rowdy as ever - after a long hiatus), and I thought that the story line concerning Burly was touching and well thought through. It was good to visit with some of old Casey's friends as well - Ramsey, Bobbie D., and Marcus for sure... All in all, strong book on characters, not so on the "who did part" - but then again - who cares - Casey was there, and so was most of the gang - the story was OK, if not great - who cares...
Not a book to read as a stand alone but if you are following Casey Jones story line - definitely not one to be missed....
