4.0 out of 5 stars Bad Manors - or Creaky Joists?, 15 Nov 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Bad Manors (Paperback)
Our heroine is an underpaid management consultant, wondering what she has to do to earn the same as the men in her office, when out of the wood work comes a tall dark handsome Toby Marks brought in to help on an account. Sparks of attraction fly, conversation is witty and full of innuendo, and it's only a matter of time before a relationship is in the making. Fast drives in his Porsche take our heroine to deepest Dorset to meet his Mother, and an invitation to a Charity "do" results in winning a raffle to Butely Manor, a ramshakle health farm offering new-age type treatments, and a truly terrible menu. After an eventful meeting with it's owner(unbeknown to her, her Father) Cat returns to work only to receive word that Butely Manors owner has died and left the Manor to her... The only problem being its run down, in need of thousands of pounds worth of work, and she feels she can get the health spa back on it's feet... Cue dusky hero in the form of Toby's half brother.. and you can guess the rest, although not as predictable as you would imagine. A plot full of twist, turns, sabotage and of course a smattering of luurve, it's a delight!
Armstrong has captured the feel of the Dorset countryside and it's residents in a cheerful and witty novel. The lively chapters keep the pages turning, as it introduces more colourful characters from the local village - the local pub "The Hung Drawn and Quartered" introduces you to meet the locals, the Annual Fete a colourful event full of everyday life in a rural ideal....it just gets better, and you never want it to end. Unfortunately it does, a little too quickly....
maybe leaving the route open for part ii?

5.0 out of 5 stars -, 13 Dec 2004
This review is from: Bad Manors (Paperback)
I read Bad Manors while I was on holiday and never wanted to go back to my
job in the city. This novel totally captures the dilemma of so many women of
our time. We all think that escape to the country will be a bed of rose
petals but Armstrong wittily points up all the pitfalls. It made me laugh
out loud. The characters are all too believable- especially Cat, the
heroine. She's certainly no angel. I hope there's a sequel. I've just
started reading Front Row, her first one, and can't put it down.
