Book Description

7 July 2011

Early one September three friends spend the weekend at a remote cabin by Dead Water Lake. With only a pale moon to light their way, they row across the water in the middle of the night. But only two of them return.

When the body of the third friend is discovered, Inspector Sejer is put in charge of the investigation. He is troubled by the apparent suicide and has an overwhelming sense that the surviving pair has something to hide. Weeks pass without further clues and then, in a nearby lake, the body of another teenage boy floats to the surface...

Review

"I not only enjoyed it but admired it, too. I also found it playing in my head for a long time afterwards, the effect on the reader every writer surely longs for" (Sunday Herald )

"The seventh Inspector Sejer novel from Norway's leading female crime writer is, like its predecessors, a gem" (Guardian )

"This is a battle of wits, conducted with chilly intensity and an unsettling sense of menace" (Sunday Times )

"Few match her ability to conjure an atmosphere of emotional as well as geographical desolation" (The Times )

"Tautly told in a crisp translation of the Norwegian by Charlotte Barslund, the story is a riveting exploration of the consequences of crime, a whydunnit rather than the traditional whodunnit" (Irish Times )

5.0 out of 5 stars An intense study of guilt 5 July 2010
By Bluebell TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book arrived this morning and, after I started to read, I couldn't put it down. I was eagerly anticipating the next of Karin Fossum's Inspector Sejer detective novels and wasn't disappointed. From the first chapter onwards a sense of menace and tension is created as three friends, Jon, Axel and Philip, obliquely refer to an unsettling event in the past that isn't revealed to the reader until late in the story. It's rather different from the previous stories in the series in that Sejer and his partner detective, Skarre, don't figure so much in the unraveling of the crimes committed. The reader is witness to the first death and we follow the guilty parties as the net tightens around them. As with other Karin Fossum novels there is a good deal of psychological distress among the characters and adept creation of a sinister atmosphere using allusions to the scenery around a crime scene.

The book is not just a riveting detective novel, but also a thoughtful exploration of the good and bad sides of human nature and the corrosive power of guilt.

5.0 out of 5 stars Karin Fossum - Bad Intentions 22 July 2010
By RachelWalker TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
It's hard to believe how good Fossum is, really. She's not for you if you're after a crime-novel as crossword; if you want that they wont satisfy you. Fossum's brief is different: her mission is to delineate the crime of the normal human, the person made criminal by awful, tragic circumstances. Her novels are supremely realistic in that sense, and they are also the most moving crime novels I have ever read. They are simply and beautiful and tragic. Bad Intentions is no different, and is probably her best since Calling Out For You. Sensitive, absorbing, heartbreaking. Real humans and punctured hearts populate the pages - there is no better crime writer alive better at describing and conveying the broad punch of grief, nor the shockingly simple path of circumstances and personality traits which lead to sad murder. A genius of a crime-writer.

Fossum ranks with Sjowall and Wahloo, P. D. James, Ruth Rendell, Ian Rankin, and Denise Mina in the crime field, and she is more consistently good than Henning Mankell. There is no better Scandinavian crime writer practicing today, in my opinion. Her books are not just mysteries, but novels describing the problems of contemporary society.

The only issue with this book is that it, like last year's Water's Edge by the same author, is too short. I wanted to hear more about Detective Sejer's personal life.
