Larkhall - Life, Love and Lies, 19 Jul 2003

To say this series is outstanding is an understatement. There is little praise that would truly acknowledge the cast of undoubtedly the best programme on TV for years. In Series 4, we find ourselves without Nikki and Helen but it is a loss we find we can bear quite easily thanks to the dominant presence of the ever-magnificent Jack Ellis as Jim Fenner and the calm, capable Karen Betts (Claire King) as the screw with a heart. We also meet shifty new govenor Neil Grayling, a man whose sharp suits cannot quite hide the secret that could ruin his career. As ever, the cons refuse to be outshone by the screws. The Two Julies remain on top form, their light-hearted debacles lending a shade of light to the darkness that often hangs over Larkhall. Top dog Yvonne still resides over the wing, ruling with a rod of iron for some and a heart of gold for those that deserve it. The tensions between she and Jim Fenner grow with every episode but it becomes clear that a relationship teetering between respect and friendship is forming with Karen. Two of the most outstanding characters in this series are lovers Denny and Shaz. Both actresses impress every time they appear on screen, portraying mouthy, fiercely loyal Denny and bright, mischievous young Shaz to perfection. Their love for each other genuinely touches viewers' hearts. It is impossible to pick out one single cast member who shines above the rest. Every single actor and character is exceptional, even those we are conditioned to hate such as cold-hearted screw Bodybag and aggressive Glaswegian Al. If forced however, I would have to turn to the man who has maintained his cocky, corrupt presence over the Wing since day 1. Jim Fenner. We have seen flashes of vulnerability in his relationship with Karen and touches of heroism that have shown us that he is human, even endeared him to us. But as usual it doesn't take him long to return to his usual self, standing tall over the women with familiar knowing gleam in those piercing blue eyes whilst breaking every rule in the book, and more besides. However low he sinks, however, I think his powerful persona will always have a place in viewers' hearts. No one can ignore him; no one can forget him. In short, to miss this series would be a crime in itself, and one that would almost certainly find the perpetrator landed in G-Wing! I can't recommend it highly enough.
