Delroy Bell is about to leave school, the prospects for him and his friends look grim. Will he realize his dream and become a professional basketball player; or will he end up juggling and gambling on the streets like his cousin Peter says ? Set in inner-city Birmingham the novel is fast moving and the characters come to life through their dialogue. Definitely worth a read.

Norman Smith's promise as a black writer can be seen in the skilful manner in which he makes his characters talk. Most of the conversation in Bad Friday is spoken in patois using genuine rhythms and phrases that reverberate with energy. He also has a fine sense of humoour. The excitement with which Delroy clinches his friendship with Vivene and his first encounter with her parents are among my favourite passages in the book. BRILLIANT!

Bad Friday addresses the dilemma of a youth faced with grim prospects in a period of cultural and political redefinition in British society. Norman Smith uses the language of his peers, and thus the novel speaks in the authentic voice of the black British Caribbean youth. It should therefore be of particular appeal to young people. Worth a read.
