Biography

R.E.M. was an American rock band formed in Athens, Georgia, USA, in 1980 by Michael Stipe (lead vocals), Peter Buck (guitar), Mike Mills (bass guitar and backing vocals), and Bill Berry (drums and percussion). R.E.M. was one of the first popular alternative rock bands, and gained early attention due to Buck's ringing, arpeggiated guitar style and Stipe's unclear vocals. R.E.M. released its first… Read more in Amazon's R.E.M. Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Typically Great R.E.M. B-Sides, 5 Oct 2004
By Memphis E. - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Bad Day (Audio CD)
If you like R.E.M. you've already heard and bought the title track, probably on the special edition of In Time: Best of 1988-2003. So did I. The question for me then was do the B-Sides (an arcane term now I guess) make this single worth buying. The answer is a resounding yes.

The first two songs are covers, done in a very enjoyable style reminiscent of great R.E.M. cover B-sides of the past. (Wall of Death, First We Take Manhattan, etc.) "Favorite Writer" is a great pop song featuring very sad, tragic words juxtaposed with tremendously happy music. "Out in the Country" is sung by either Mike Mills (possibly his voice has changed a little since we last heard him sing a lead?) or a guest vocalist. There are some tricky rhythmic things happening. "Adagio" is a slow orchestral instrumental that would have fit well on the "Man in the Moon" soundtrack album.

The title song is great, and the 3 non-album tracks make this single a great value for the money. It's the perfect R.E.M. CD Single! (One of many)

5.0 out of 5 stars Yea baby, 16 Nov 2003

I just recently listened to these songs, and I fell in love! I have pretty much all of REM's CDs, making new songs a real treat to hear. When Reveal came out, I wasn't so impressed. Because of that minor disappointment, I wondered how I would like the next new material to come out. I'm just here to say I love it! I give REM all my love.
