This collection of operatic villains is an absolute joy from start to finish, featuring not just "the usual suspects" (Iago, Scarpia, Pizarro et al), but also Sporting Life from "Porgy and Bess", Sondheim's Sweeney Todd, Javert from "Les Mis" and Sir Roderic from "Ruddigore"(great!). Much as Mr Terfel throws himself into the Gershwin, it is, of course, a tenor part and the inevitable transposition does not really work. The scene from "Les Mis" stands out as inferior material; perhaps I'm just a snob! He is a little light-weight for Kaspar and Basilio, but for most of the other roles he is well-nigh perfect and sings with keen insight and rich tone. The disc ends with him singing all three baritone/bass parts from the final scene of "Don Giovanni"; while one has to admire the engineering, it has to be admitted that they all sound just like Bryn and it was carried off rather more effectively by Laszlo Polgar on his Hungaraton Mozart recital. Overall, however, lovers of the bass-baritone voice will find much to admire here.
