This is a first collection of short stories by a former stripper and panhandler who has previously won several prizes for short fiction. These strange and poignant stories of seedy New York life are concerned with social isolation and sexual depravity.

I had seen the movie The Secretary, which was inspired by the story of the same name which comes in this book. I was really excited that it was a book of short stories about unconventional relationships, and the title certainly sounded promising. However I was really, really dissapointed. This book is un-sexy, conventional and frankly, boring. This is basically a book of dull conversations between people, which no real action or desire the book promises. In one story it details a woman having dental surgery, really, do we really need 3 pages of that?! I actually now regret buying this book, the one star is only for the short story of the Secretary, which is the only story that delivers some actual feeling. Avoid.
