Product Description

Product Description

- The Kane Gang emerged from Newcastle-Upon-Tyne’s successful Kitchenware stable in the
early 1980s, with a distinctive, gritty brand of lyrically acerbic, blue-eyed soul/funk.

- Released in early 1985, debut album THE BAD & LOWDOWN WORLD OF THE KANE GANG reached No. 21 in the album charts and has been unavailable on CD for well over a decade.

- The album boasted several hit singles: ‘Small Town Creed’ (No. 60), ‘Closest Thing To Heaven’ (No. 12), a cover of the Staple Singers’ ‘Respect Yourself’ (No. 21) and ‘Gun Law’ (No. 53).

- Compiled and collated by founder members Dave Brewis, Martin Brammer and Paul Woods, THE BAD & LOWDOWN WORLD OF THE KANE GANG is now treated to a 3-CD deluxe edition.

- The original album has been re-mastered with a host of non-album bonus tracks and debut
single ‘Brother Brother’, including the best of the many remixes from the period.

- The package also boasts a baker’s dozen of previously unheard Kane Gang demos, recorded
during and after the album sessions (and prior to their second album).

- Disc 3 is given over to an exclusive live concert from Glasgow Strathclyde University 17/11/84, only two tracks from which were originally released as B-sides.

- Dave, Martin and Paul have been interviewed for the lengthy sleeve-notes.

This is a must-buy album package! This fantastic original Kane Gang album been reissued at last, including the sublime "Closest Thing To Heaven," (which sounds even better here than I remember it on vinyl) plus other hits such as "Respect Yourself," "Gun Law," and "Smalltown Creed" (along with extra tracks such as their debut single "Brother Brother" and rare B-sides. Not only this, but there are two extra CD's! One has a whole host of unreleased songs from that time, recorded as demos but sounds more like an album in itself, and the other is a full live CD from one of their shows in Glasgow in 1984 (given that I missed their tour this is great to hear and is a great album on it's own!) This is a fantastic price and a great package deserving the 'Deluxe Edition' name. You get the whole thing on mp3s also, which is brilliant! If you like any of the Kane Gang's hits, there's plenty to listen to here, and you won't be disappointed. No filler, no duds, just quality music! I hope their second album "Miracle" gets the same treatment soon!

It's just a joy to have this wonderful package. The songs are sounding great in their new refreshed revamp - and with all the extras included it has got everything from this period so you feel like you can capture it all at once but in great quality sound whereas for ages now you could only listen to poor quality bits and pieces posted here and there (apart from the original albums of course, which still sound great). This changes all that! I can't wait to see if they do something with the second album too. This was a great band - it's fantastic to be able to listen to such a large body of work in one set, with some new surprises too.

For such a minor commercial force, a three-disc box set may seem excessive at first, but it makes perfect sense here. My preference for this kind of treatment would have been the superior second album "Miracle" - I guess one can still hope. I was initially dreading countless remixes, but far from it, the extras, including a rare interview with all three band members, are well worth having in their own right. Standards were obviously high, as even their demos on disc two, none of which were used for the final album, could almost pass for the finished product. However, the real draw is the third disc, a live album capturing the band at their most energetic and soulful on their one major tour in late 1984. As for sound quality, Nick Watson is responsible for this remaster. With an average DR value of 9, it's slightly on the loud side, but I don't detect much compression. It's all EQ-ed very nicely, revealing plenty of detail that was missing on the original CD. Buy with confidence!
