Product Description

Sport utilities are the most popular vehicles on the market, and they open up a world of possibilities for travels with a yen to wander the trails of the backcountry. "Backroad Adventuring" is the perfect introduction to "green" backcountry travel and camping with a sport utility vehicle. The Hansons' guidebook is tailored to families who want to travel and camp and have adventures in the great outdoors - without harming the land. They give the reader comprehensive advice, including: advice on driving, maintenance, equipment, packing, and camping; sidebars featuring real-life adventures; 4-wheel travel for families; and an appendix of information resources, including equipment manufacturers and organizations.

From the Back Cover

Use your SUV for what it's built for: hard, safe, backroad driving.

Your sport utility vehicle was meant for wilder things than tame suburban roads. Backroad Adventuring will unlock its potential and teach you the best ways to navigate the rough roads and byways.

Roseann and Jonathan Hanson have driven 200,000 miles in three SUVs. Here they distill all their hard-won advice. Now any driver can learn how to get the most out of an SUV and really use it safely, thoughtfully, and
noninvasively to explore the out-of-the-way paradises only a four-wheel-drive can reach.

This friendly, practical guide will give you the nuts
and bolts of taking an SUV on exciting backroad journeys:
-How to drive on different kinds of roads and terrain
-Low-impact driving tips for preserving the environment
-Troubleshooting and simple on-the-road repairs
-Great ideas for trip planning
-How to keep your kids happy and safe on the road

Along the way, the authors share tales both amusing
and instructive of their own fascinating road-trip adventures. Follow their lead and begin your own explorations.

Environmentally sensitive SUV guides 23 Dec 2004

J.Hopkins states in a previous review that "This is the first book published in the US that shows a 4WD can be used for more than trashing the backcountry."

Clearly Mr. Hopkins is unfamiliar with the excellent back roads guides by authors like F.A. Barnes and Charles A. Wells, which are guides for responsible use of SUVs and jeeps to provide people with access to remote areas, especially for people who are not in the excellent health and physical condition to be able to hike long distances while carrying a heavy backpack.

This is the first book published in the US that shows a 4WD can be used for more than trashing the backcountry. If you want to start expedition style driving this is the place to start.
