First of all, let me say I love Jet plane Landing, I have all their singles, all 3 albums and the 'Els Quatre Gats,' EP.
My favourite album has been 'Once Like A Spark,' since I first bought it. I am also aware that when a band changes it's style it always meets with disapproval, you only have to look at Pink Floyd or Genesis in the 80's.
As someone who always loved Jetpalne landing, especially 'Once Like a Spark,' I was shocked to hear that they feel OLAS doesn't sound like Jetplane Landing and furthermore had decided to radically overhaul their sound, incorporating a large funk and rap influence, and dropping their usual post hardcore meets indie style almost completely.
The album is understandably a huge departure, sounding more like Limp Bizkit and Rage Against The Machine than At The Drive In or Fugazi. The drummer has fallen in love with the cowbell, but has also improved considerably, sounding as busy as Matt Helders on occasion, when not being drown out by additional percussion.
The songs break down into wah guitar 70's funk on numerous occasions, and Cahir will rap in a Derry accent every two songs or so.
Only about forty seconds of the album sound like the band I love, but sometimes hints of the 'Zero for Conduct,' emotional sound will appear, only this time whiney sounding and sort of camp. The low point of the album are the pretentious spoken word segments and preachy, dull lyrics.
However, despite the shocking change in style, and irritating lyrics this is not a poor album. Its full of catchy and bouncy riffs, great vocal patterns and surprisingly... excellent guitar solos, much more impressive than you would expect, and better than on any previous Jetplane song.
It is unfair to judge an album as poor just because its so very different from its predecessors, but on the strength of the album itself it still pretty dreadful. Buy it if you like funk metal, or want a change.
