Linda La Plante is without doubt at the top of her game - every book in the Above Suspicion series has been
brilliant but this her eighth is without doubt her best yet.

This time instead of reading the book I listened to the audio C.D's - twelve in total, with thirteen hours
listening time, which kept me gripped on my daily commute in the car. It is expertly narrated by Kim Hinks
and added to the enjoyment.

One of the best things about the Above Suspicion series is the continuation of characters throughout which
is why I would recommend reading in order - they are all amazing. I do not want to divulge the plot or
give anything away suffice to say you have all the ingredients you would expect from the mistress of crime
the case, the plot, the suspect and the confession - it's a nail bitingly cracking good story.

Just one word of caution the lanuage is very strong used frequently and whilst it doesn't add to the story
it is easy to ignore. Five stars plus from me.

From the outset a man is arrested and charged with murder. In course of questioning he seems to confess to two other murders. He soon claims he was joking but he seems to be familiar with the circumstances. The story developes as a detailed investigation of past murders. Is the suspect a serial killer? The main police presence is DCI Anna Travers, a well drawn chacter. This story is like pealing away the petals of a rose-slowly you get to the center. It is a very good detailed description of police proceedure. There are many surprises along the way. Well worth listening to especially on a long car journey as I did.

These books just keep getting better and better. The last few Martina Cole books I have read, I have found to be repetitive but Lynda La Plante keeps you guessing to the very end. I have recommended this to friends and family

Have been a Lynda LaPlante fan for a very long time. Her Anna Travis series is one of the best in the genre. I live in the US and must send to the UK for her books. It is more expensive but well worth it. She is a truly gifted writer and her books are witten with intensity and an eye for detail. Once you start reading it, it is rather difficult to stop. Actually, this one I am reading in tandem with my friend who lives in th UK, since we are both huge fans. If you have not had the pleasure of experiencing one of her books, you are missing out on some great reading. I am always sad when I finish one of her books since you then have to wait for the next one!

I was disappointed by Silent Scream and Bloodline, compared to her earlier novels. This is a great improvement and back to the gritty, thrilling, edge of your seat stuff of early Prime Suspect and Trial & Retribution.

I was surprised at the 13 hour length of this detective novel set on the edges of London, however it required that length to include the intricacy of plot. I feel it would be difficult to abridge whilst retaining the quality.

The main story is a simple detection of a serial killer who has confessed, but left virtually no evidence. The main storyline is related to finding and following the missing evidence. Secondary themes include the murderer's background and the relationships between the central characters.

All the major characters are well drawn, with depth, finesse and reasonable flaws. I particularly enjoyed the depiction of the very well dressed solicitor Kumar at a quarry.

I listened to the book whilst driving up and down England for some job interviews, which ironically took me close to several of the areas where the audio-book is set.

I did enjoyed Backlash, and thoroughly recommend it.
